Manual Overview

The service manual for the B&K Model 801 Capacitor Analyzer provides detailed instructions for troubleshooting, diagnostics, and calibration of capacitors. The manual emphasizes the importance of disconnecting power before testing and outlines specific tests for shorts, opens, leakage, and capacity value. For troubleshooting, the manual details a flow for conducting short and open tests both in and out of circuit, using the GOOD-BAD scale to determine capacitor status. For leakage tests, it advises disconnecting one lead and using the appropriate selector position, with a focus on safety due to the presence of 100 volts DC on the test lead. Calibration involves adjusting controls for full scale on the meter. The manual also provides guidance on interpreting meter readings, particularly in distinguishing between capacitor leakage and shunting resistance. For board-level diagnostics, it advises on the correct connection of test leads and the interpretation of meter scales for accurate results.

Quick Issues Covered

  • Diagnose capacitor shorts and opens with in-circuit tests.
  • Measure capacitor leakage resistance; replace if below 100 megohms.
  • Refer to schematics for circuit tracing and component location.

Overview

The Model 801 Capacitor Analyzer by B&K Manufacturing Company is designed to analyze capacitors for defects affecting electronic equipment like TVs and radios. It evaluates the life expectancy and energy storing capabilities of electrolytic capacitors up to 2000 mfd and measures the value of other capacitors from 25 pfd to 100 mfd. The analyzer tests capacitors for shorts and opens both in and out of circuit and measures leakage of all capacitors except electrolytics under in-circuit conditions. The manual provides detailed instructions for various tests, including short, open, leakage, and capacity value tests, with specific procedures for electrolytic capacitors.

Operation

The manual provides detailed instructions for operating the Model 801 Capacitor Analyzer. The device is used to analyze capacitors for defects, evaluate life expectancy and energy storing capabilities, measure capacitance values, and test for shorts, opens, and leakage.

Basic usage steps include:

1. Short Test: Rotate the selector to “SHORT,” connect the blue and black leads to the capacitor, and read the GOOD-BAD scale. This can be done in or out of circuit.

2. Open Test: Rotate the selector to “OPEN,” connect the blue and black leads to the capacitor, and read the GOOD-BAD scale. This can also be done in or out of circuit.

3. Leakage Test: Disconnect one lead of the capacitor if in circuit, rotate the selector to the appropriate leakage position, connect the red and blue leads to the capacitor, adjust the meter for infinity on the leakage scale, depress the test switch, and read the leakage resistance in megohms.

4. Capacity Value Test: Disconnect one lead of the capacitor if in circuit, rotate the selector to the desired capacity range, adjust the calibrate control for full scale on the meter, connect the blue and black leads to the capacitor, and read the value on the scale marked PFD or MFD.

5. Electrolytic Capacitor Test: Disconnect one lead of the capacitor if in circuit, rotate the selector to “CALIBRATE,” adjust the calibrate control for full scale, connect the blue lead to the positive side and the black lead to the negative side of the capacitor, rotate the selector to the desired range, and read the value on the blue meter scales. If the electrolytic short lamp glows brightly with no meter reading, the capacitor is shorted. If the lamp does not glow and there is no meter reading, the capacitor is open.

Safety precautions include ensuring the unit is calibrated for 60 cycle AC operation and being cautious of the 100 volts DC that appears on the red test lead when the selector switch is in the 100 volt leakage position.

Safety & Warnings

When the Selector switch is in the 100 volt leakage position and the Test switch is depressed, 100 volts DC appears on the RED test lead. Proper safety precautions should be taken while performing this test. A discharge circuit has been incorporated into the 801 to discharge capacitors after they have been tested in this position.
