The Sencore Mighty Mite setup manual provides detailed instructions for setting up and operating the TC114, TC130, TC136, TC142, and TC154 tube checkers, including how to adjust controls, perform emission and grid leakage tests, and conduct short tests. It also offers troubleshooting tips, such as checking for filament sensitivity and proper socket usage for magnoval based tubes to prevent damage.
Manual Overview
The Sencore Mighty Mite tube tester manual provides detailed instructions for setting up and troubleshooting the TC114, TC130, TC136, TC142, and TC154 models. The manual emphasizes the importance of proper calibration, instructing users to set controls A, B, C, and D according to the setup chart before inserting the tube into the socket. Calibration is achieved by adjusting the CAL control to ensure the meter reads full scale. The manual also details the procedure for conducting emission and grid leakage tests, with specific guidance on interpreting meter readings. For troubleshooting, the SHORT TEST function is used to identify shorts or excessive leakage, with specific settings for heater-to-cathode leakage tests. The manual highlights the necessity of performing a LIFE TEST to detect filament sensitivity, which involves reducing the filament voltage and observing any changes in the meter reading. Additionally, the manual provides specific instructions for handling magnoval-based tubes to prevent socket damage. These procedures ensure accurate diagnostics and prolong the life of the tubes being tested.
Quick Issues Covered
- Diagnose power-up failures with tube setup and calibration instructions.
- Identify grid leakage using the grid leakage test procedure.
- Refer to schematics for circuit tracing and troubleshooting.
Overview
The Mighty Mite is a universal set-up book for various models of tube checkers, specifically the TC114, TC130, TC136, TC142, and TC154. It is designed to be portable and durable, with large type to eliminate the need for indexing, reducing wear on the set-up pages. The Mighty Mite is a popular tube tester known for being fast, accurate, and reliable, with a weight of only 9 pounds and rugged steel construction. It is suitable for both shop and home use. The tester includes features for low voltage checks for specific tube types and provides detailed operating instructions for setting controls and conducting various tests, such as emission, grid leakage, and short tests. Additional tests for filament sensitivity and life tests are recommended to ensure tube reliability in circuits. Special instructions are provided for testing magnoval based tubes to prevent socket damage.

Operation
The operation of the Mighty Mite tube tester involves setting controls A, B, C, and D according to the set-up chart and inserting the tube into the indicated socket. If the tube has a plate cap, use the plate cap lead. The FUNCTION switch is set to ‘CAL,’ and the CAL control is adjusted so that the meter reads full scale. Then, the FUNCTION switch is set to EMISSION to read the top scale on the meter. If the tube shows good emission, the FUNCTION switch is set to GRID LEAKAGE to check the lower scale for grid leakage.
For the SHORT TEST, the FUNCTION switch is set to SHORT TEST, and switch D is rotated through all positions. The short indicator light will glow on both electrodes if the tube is shorted or has excessive leakage. Faint flashes in the short indicator can be disregarded. Tubes marked with an asterisk in the set-up chart have internal connections that may show as a short on indicated settings. The H-K setting is for heater to cathode leakage or short test.
Additional tests include checking for filament sensitivity, which involves performing a LIFE TEST. If the tube reads good emission, the FILAMENT (A) switch is moved down one step. A good tube will not affect the meter needle, but a filament-sensitive tube will cause the meter reading to drop. If the reading remains in the GOOD area, the tube is acceptable, but if it falls to the question mark or BAD area, the tube should be replaced.
For magnoval based tubes, they are checked in specific sockets, and care should be taken not to insert them fully to avoid damage. Instead, hold the tube to make firm contact for the test.
