Operation
The Heathkit Model AT-1 Transmitter can be operated on amateur bands of 80, 40, 20, 15, 11, and 10 meters using either crystal or VFO control. For operation, the operator should determine the frequency range and permissible emission type for the desired band. The crystal frequency needed can be calculated by dividing the desired frequency by its harmonic relation to the crystal fundamental. For 10 meter band operation, an 80 meter crystal on its 8th harmonic can be used, but 40 meter crystals are recommended for bands from 20 to 10 meters. A VFO can control the transmitter by connecting its output to the crystal socket, ensuring the VFO output is within the band, especially at higher frequencies.
For 80 meter operation, a crystal between 3,500 and 4,000 kc should be used. After turning on the power and allowing the transmitter to warm up, the STANDBY switch is left in the STANDBY position, and the meter switch is set to PLATE. The STANDBY switch is then turned on, the key is depressed, and the OUTPUT control is quickly tuned for a dip. The antenna coupler is tuned for a rise in plate current, adjusting the OUTPUT control for resonance. The final current reading should be about 60 to 80 milliamperes. If lower, antenna coupling should be increased; if a dip is no longer possible, coupling should be reduced.
For 40 meter operation, a crystal between 3,500 and 3,650 kc is used, and the meter switch is set to GRID. The STANDBY switch is turned on, the key is depressed, and the DRIVER control is quickly tuned for maximum meter reading. The meter switch is then set to PLATE, the key is depressed, and tuning is done for a dip. The antenna is tuned as outlined for 80 meter operation.
For 20, 15, 11, and 10 meter operation, the tuning method is the same as for the 40 meter band, with different crystal frequencies. The 15 meter and 11 meter bands are operated on the 10 meter position of the band switch.
