Safety & Warnings

The manual contains several safety warnings and precautions:

1. High voltage is used in the operation of this equipment, and death on contact may result if safety precautions are not observed.
2. Be careful when working on the power supply unit with the bottom plate off, as d-c voltages are over 400 volts and a-c potentials up to 900 volts, which are dangerous to life.
3. With the dust cover and bottom plate removed from the receiver, voltages up to 250 volts are exposed at several points on top of the chassis, and voltages up to 400 volts are exposed at several points underneath the chassis.
4. Some service checks must be made inside the set with the high voltage on. During these checks, always have another person capable of rendering aid present and keep one hand in your pocket to prevent touching the electrical circuit with more than one part of the body at one time.
5. Audio-frequency voltages up to 150 volts may be present at the 600-ohm SPKR terminals under certain conditions. Turn the AUDIO GAIN control to 0 before touching these terminals.
6. Never remove the sheet metal covers from the connector cable terminal strips without first detaching the plug from the a-c power line or disconnecting the batteries; turning the OFF-ON switch to OFF is not enough.
7. In case of electric shock, shut off the high voltage at once and ground the circuits. If the high voltage cannot be turned off without delay, free the victim from contact with the live conductor using a dry board, dry clothing, or other nonconductor. Use extreme caution to avoid the resulting electric flash.

Overview

The Hammarlund AN-4-1948 is a vintage communication receiver designed for high-performance radio signal reception. Widely used in the mid-20th century, this device is renowned for its durability and precision in tuning across various frequency bands. It serves both amateur radio enthusiasts and professional operators, providing reliable service for receiving AM, CW, and SSB signals.

Main Features and Specifications

  • Frequency Coverage: 540 kHz to 30 MHz
  • Multiple tuning ranges with calibrated dials
  • High sensitivity and selectivity for clear signal reception
  • Built-in noise limiter and automatic volume control (AVC)
  • Robust vacuum tube design for enhanced reliability
  • External speaker and headphone outputs
  • Compact and rugged chassis suitable for field and stationary use

Basic Usage and Operation Tips

To operate the Hammarlund AN-4-1948, first ensure the unit is properly connected to a suitable power source and antenna. Begin by selecting the desired frequency band using the band switch, then use the main tuning dial to zero in on the target frequency. Adjust the volume and tone controls for optimal audio clarity. Utilize the noise limiter to reduce background interference during reception. Regularly check the calibration of the tuning dial to maintain accuracy.

Troubleshooting and Maintenance

Common issues include weak or distorted audio, which may result from tube wear or misalignment. Periodically inspect vacuum tubes and replace any that show signs of damage or reduced performance. Clean all contacts and switches to prevent oxidation-related faults. If reception is inconsistent, verify antenna connections and grounding. For detailed alignment and servicing procedures, refer to the full service manual.

Safety Reminder

Always disconnect the receiver from the power source before performing any maintenance or tube replacement. Handle vacuum tubes with care, as they can become hot during operation and are fragile. Avoid exposing the device to moisture or extreme temperatures to prevent electrical hazards and damage.
