Operation

The operation of the Super Skyrider involves plugging the receiver into a power socket, typically operating on 60 cycle 110 volt alternating current. To turn on the receiver, the “Tone” control is turned to the right. During the warm-up period, the “RF Gain” and “AF Gain” knobs should also be turned to the right. The receiver is shipped with the band change switch set to the highest frequency range. The “Bands” switch should be adjusted until the pointer on the calibrated main dial indicates the desired band. It is suggested to become familiar with the operation on Bands No. 1 and No. 2 before trying higher frequencies. For distant or weak signals, the “BFO Injection” control can be used by turning the knob to the right. When listening to C.W. transmissions, the control must be left on, and the strength of the BFO output can be increased by advancing the control to the right. The “Pitch Control” knob helps in changing the beat note to a more pleasing sound. When the BFO control is on, the “AVC” switch should always be in the “Off” position.

For phone reception, whether broadcast or short wave, it is recommended to leave the “AVC” switch in the “On” position. The “RF Gain” control should be turned as far as it will go to the right, or until the snap switch is heard. With the “AVC” switch “Off” and the “RF Gain” wide open, the set may block on strong signals. In such cases, the sensitivity should be adjusted manually with the “RF Gain” control to a point below which overloading occurs. By adjusting both the “RF Gain” and “AF Gain” controls, the most favorable ratio of signal to noise can be found. The “Carrier Level” meter functions only when the “AVC” switch is “On” and the “RF Gain” control is advanced to the right until the switch is heard being closed. The adjustment control for setting the carrier level meter is on the back of the chassis. With the AVC switch in the “On” position and the RF Gain wide open, the control should be adjusted so that the meter reads “0.” The antenna should be disconnected for this operation and the receiver detuned from any audible signal.

For the reception of C.W. signals, the “AVC” switch should be in the “Off” position and the “BFO Injection” control turned on. Variation of this control changes the output of the beat oscillator. Weak signals can be copied by adjusting the injection control for minimum output. Turning the control to the right as far as it will go gives maximum beat oscillator output, allowing the oscillator to beat the most powerful incoming signals.
