The operation manual for Drake SCHEMATICS provides detailed instructions for the installation, operation, and troubleshooting of accessories such as the SCC-4 Crystal Calibrator, 5-NB Noise Blanker, and RY-4 Radio Teletype Adaptor. It includes specific steps for setup, circuit descriptions, service data, and alignment procedures to ensure optimal performance and address any issues that may arise during use.
Manual Overview
The operation manual for Drake SCHEMATICS provides detailed instructions for troubleshooting, diagnostics, calibration, and board-level guidance for the SCC-4 Crystal Calibrator and the 5-NB Noise Blanker. The SCC-4 is a 100 kHz crystal-controlled oscillator that injects harmonics into the SPR-4 receiver. Installation involves inserting the SCC-4 into the designated socket on the SPR-4 chassis. Troubleshooting is supported by a voltage chart and schematic. Calibration requires warming the device and adjusting the ceramic trimmer capacitor for zero beat.
The 5-NB Noise Blanker mutes the receiver during noise pulses, restoring gain between pulses. Installation involves connecting the 5-NB to specific sockets on the SPR-4 chassis. The circuit description details the signal processing through various transistors and filters. Troubleshooting is aided by a voltage chart and schematic. Although factory aligned, the 5-NB may require adjustments using a VIVM and signal generator to optimize performance. The manual emphasizes careful handling during installation and adjustment to ensure proper operation and longevity of the components.
Quick Issues Covered
- Diagnose power-up failures with SCC-4 crystal calibrator installation.
- Calibrate SCC-4 using ceramic trimmer for zero beat alignment.

Installation / Setup
To install the SCC-4 Crystal Calibrator, remove the top row of three screws on each side of the SPR-4 cabinet, disconnect the power cord and internal speaker cable, and remove the cabinet top. Insert the SCC-4 into the socket marked CALIBRATOR at the left rear of the SPR-4 chassis, then replace the cabinet top, power cord, and speaker cable.
For the 5-NB Noise Blanker, remove the top row of three screws on each side of the SPR-4 Receiver cabinet, disconnect the power cord and internal speaker cable, and remove the cabinet top. Unplug the jumper cable from the sockets marked noise blanker, retain it for future use, and install the 5-NB by plugging it into the two sockets on top of the SPR-4 chassis. Ensure the 5-NB is seated properly, then replace the cabinet top, power cord, and speaker cable.
The RY-4 Radioteletype Adaptor installation should be performed by a competent technician. Disconnect the speaker cable and line cord, remove the SPR-4 cabinet, and mount the circuit board using a No. 4 sheet metal screw and lockwasher. If necessary, mount the circuit board foot under the No. 6 nut on the PTO spade bolt. Mount the phono jack with nut, lockwasher, and ground lug on the inside of the chassis, connect the .01 disc capacitor between the phono jack and ground lug, solder the ground lug, and connect the wires between the RY-4 circuit board and BFO board terminals.
Operation
The calibrator is switched on by placing the accessories switch on the front panel in the CAL position.
The 5-NB is controlled by the SPR-4 accessory switch. When the accessory switch is in NB position, the 5-NB is turned on. The accessory switch may be left in the NB position for full-time protection against noise interference. Some distortion may be noted when using the 5-NB on extremely strong signals.
