Manual Overview

The B&K Model 667 Solid State Tube Tester manual provides detailed instructions for testing electronic tubes, emphasizing troubleshooting, error diagnostics, and calibration. The tester performs various tests, including shorts, leakage, quality, and grid emission checks. Shorts and leakage are detected using a neon bulb indicator with a sensitivity of 1 megohm, while grid leakage is measured with a high-impedance FET amplifier. The manual outlines a step-by-step procedure for using the tester, including setting the heater voltage, inserting the tube, and using the lockout switches to prevent false readings. The tester’s lockout feature is crucial for accurately identifying shorts by isolating specific tube pins. Calibration instructions ensure accurate readings, and the manual provides guidance on interpreting meter results for tube quality, categorized into Bad, Questionable, and Good. The tester is housed in a durable, portable case, making it suitable for field use. Proper calibration and adherence to the outlined procedures are essential for maintaining the tester’s accuracy and reliability.

Quick Issues Covered

  • Diagnose shorts using neon bulb and selector switch.
  • Calibrate using load and heater voltage settings.
  • Trace circuits with schematic for lockout switch usage.

Operation

Look up the tube in the chart. Rotate the HEATER voltage switch “A” to the indicated setting. Insert the tube in the indicated socket. Depress the RESET pushbutton “B”. Depress the LOCKOUT switches “C” as indicated. Set the LOAD switch “D” to the position indicated. Actuate the POWER switch “E”. To test for all shorts, rotate the SELECTOR switch “F”, pausing in each of its twelve positions, and observe the SHORTS Lamp “G”. A steady glowing of the SHORTS Lamp on any position of the switch is cause for rejection of the tube. Momentary flashes between positions are to be ignored. Lightly tap the tube with a fingertip while rotating for shorts to help locate intermittent shorts. Do not tap with a screwdriver or other hard object, as this may cause damage to the tube. Certain types of video amplifier tubes with high Gm, such as 12HG7 and 6GN7, should not be tapped at all. Set the SELECTOR switch to the position indicated. Depress the LEAKAGE button “H”. A deflection of the meter pointer into the GRID EMISSION—REJECT area of the top scale “J” is cause for rejection of the tube. Depress the QUALITY button “K”. Observe test results on the GOOD-BAD scale of the meter “L”. This completes the test. Turn the tester power off by releasing the POWER pushbutton. Always set the heater switch to the correct filament voltage position before inserting the tube in the socket to prevent burning out the filament of the tube.
