Safety & Warnings

Normal use of test equipment exposes users to danger from electrical shock, especially when testing where high voltage is present. An electrical shock causing 10 milliamps of current through the heart can be fatal. Voltage as low as 35 volts dc or ac rms is considered dangerous as it can produce a lethal current under certain conditions. Users should follow accepted practices to prevent contact with high voltage and steer current away from the heart in case of accidental contact. Specific safety precautions include:

1. The power supply output, producing a maximum of 35 volts dc, poses little danger of electrical shock. However, if connected to an external high voltage, it can be dangerous.
a. If testing “hot chassis” type equipment, a shock hazard exists unless the equipment is unplugged or an isolation transformer is used.
b. If the equipment under test is powered and uses high voltage, the power supply outputs may float to the potential at the connection point. High voltage may appear unexpectedly in defective equipment. Do not float the power supply output to more than 100 volts peak with respect to chassis or earth ground.
c. If the equipment under test is off but uses high voltage in normal operation, discharge high-voltage capacitors before making connections or tests as some circuits retain high voltage after being turned off.

2. Use a polarized 3-wire ac outlet to ensure the power supply chassis, case, and ground terminal are connected to a good earth ground, reducing shock danger.

3. Avoid exposing high voltage unnecessarily. Remove housings and covers only when necessary. Turn off equipment while making test connections in high-voltage circuits and discharge high-voltage capacitors after removing power.

Basic Usage and Operation Tips

Before using the Bk-precision-1743a, ensure the device is powered on and the test leads are properly connected. Select the appropriate measurement mode using the rotary switch. For voltage measurements, connect the probes in parallel with the circuit; for current, connect them in series. Use the data hold feature to freeze readings for easier analysis. Always start with the highest range to prevent damage and switch to a lower range for more precise readings once the approximate value is known.

Troubleshooting and Maintenance

If the multimeter displays erratic readings or fails to power on, check the battery and replace it if necessary. Ensure the test leads are intact and properly connected. Clean the device regularly with a dry cloth and avoid exposure to moisture or extreme temperatures. If the device shows “OL” or overload, reduce the input signal or switch to a higher measurement range. For persistent issues, consult the full manual or contact authorized service centers.

Safety Reminder

Always observe safety precautions when using the Bk-precision-1743a. Do not exceed the maximum input limits to avoid electric shock or damage. Use insulated test leads and avoid measuring live circuits without proper protective equipment. Disconnect power before testing resistance or continuity. Follow all local electrical safety regulations to ensure safe operation.
