The B&K Precision Operation Manual for models 1696, 1697, and 1698 covers the setup, operation, and troubleshooting of laboratory-grade switching mode programmable DC power supplies with a PC interface. It includes instructions on setting operation modes, using manual and timed programs, recalibration, and troubleshooting, as well as details on the PC interface control and safety precautions.
Manual Overview
The Bk Precision models 1696, 1697, and 1698 are laboratory-grade, switching mode programmable DC power supplies equipped with a PC interface. These units are designed for repetitive test routines and offer four operation methods: manual operation, presets, timed programs, and PC interface mode. Troubleshooting involves checking for error codes such as Over Voltage Protection (OVP) and Over Temperature/Overload warnings, which trigger a buzzer and require the unit to be switched off and cooled down. Calibration can be performed without opening the case, thanks to the micro-controller unit and software. The power supplies feature a large back-lit LCD for easy monitoring of voltage, current, and operational status. For diagnostics, the units provide error messages and require the removal of loads before resetting. Board-level guidance includes using the RS-232 or RS-485 ports for communication and data logging. The manual emphasizes the importance of using supplied software and accessories, and it advises contacting the manufacturer for persistent issues.

Operation
The operation of the BK Precision Models 1696, 1697, and 1698 involves four main methods: Manual Operation, Presets, Timed Program, and PC Interface Mode. The large Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) guides users through various operations interactively. There are four Dual Function Control Keys used for different operation modes and input states. To change or set the operation mode, such as output on/off or key lock, two Dual Function keys are typically required. For changing input values like voltage, current, or time periods, the ENTER key is used to confirm new settings. The back-lit LCD displays both preset and actual voltage and current levels at the output terminals, and indicates the status of constant current (CC) or constant voltage (CV) mode. The unit can store 10 programs, with Program 1 to 9 designated for nine sets of Presets of voltage and current.

Safety & Warnings
IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS & PRECAUTIONS
1. Do not use this apparatus near water.
2. Clean only with a dry cloth.
3. Do not block any ventilation openings.
4. Do not install the unit near any heat source or heat-emitting devices.
5. Prevent the power cord from being walked on or pinched.
6. Unplug this unit during lightning storms or when unused for long periods of time.
PRECAUTIONS
1. The unit must be used within its specified range. The rated input voltages can be found on the rating label at the back of the unit. Before plugging into the AC supply, check with the rating label.
2. This unit has a built-in Tracking O.V.P. (Over Voltage Protection) feature. In the event of the output voltage becoming 10% greater than the set value, the O.V.P. will be triggered, and the output power will be cut off, and a > FAULT< warning will appear. When you get this warning, switch off the unit and remove all loading. If you switch the unit back on again, it should resume normal operation. If this problem persists, contact the manufacturer.
3. This unit has a buzzer built inside. The buzzer will sound when Over Temperature/Overload/Over Voltage Protection has been triggered. When you get this warning, switch off the unit and remove all loading. Check your load and output voltage setting. Allow the unit to cool down for 30 minutes. If you switch the unit back on again, it should resume normal operation. If this problem persists, the unit must be investigated by your agent.
4. Only use the supplied software and optional accessories with this unit.
5. Refer all servicing to the manufacturer.
Warning: Model 1698, the maximum output voltage for this is up to 60Vdc. It may be hazardous to touch the metal part of the terminals.

Basic Usage and Operation Tips
Before using the multimeter, ensure the test leads are properly connected to the appropriate input jacks. Select the correct measurement mode and range for the parameter you intend to measure. When measuring voltage or current, always start with the highest range to prevent damage to the device. Use the data hold button to freeze the displayed reading when needed. Always disconnect power from the circuit before measuring resistance or continuity to avoid inaccurate readings or damage.
Troubleshooting and Maintenance
If the multimeter displays erratic readings or no display at all, check the battery and replace it if necessary. Inspect the test leads for any signs of wear or damage and replace them if faulty. Clean the device regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoid using harsh chemicals. Store the multimeter in a dry, dust-free environment to prolong its lifespan. If the device fails to operate correctly after basic troubleshooting, consult the full manual or contact authorized service centers.
Safety Reminder
Always observe proper safety precautions when using the multimeter. Do not exceed the maximum input limits specified for each measurement mode. Avoid measuring voltage or current on live circuits with exposed conductors to prevent electric shock. Use insulated test leads and keep fingers behind the protective barriers on the probes. Disconnect the test leads from the device before opening the battery compartment. Following these safety guidelines helps ensure safe and effective use of your Bk-precision multimeter.
