Operation

The manual provides operating instructions for the B & K-Precision Model 1660 Triple Output DC Power Supply. It describes the independent use of the “Master” or “Slave” supply, series tracking operation, parallel tracking operation, and 4-6.5 V power supply operation. The two 0-30 volt supplies can be used independently or in tracking modes. In series tracking mode, the Slave supply tracks the voltage of the Master supply, allowing a single output of 0-60 V at up to 2 amps. In parallel tracking mode, the supplies are connected in parallel, allowing a single 0-30 V output at up to 4 amps. Both supplies can be used in constant voltage or constant current applications, with smooth and automatic crossover between modes. LED indicators show the mode of operation. Current limits can be preset, and the output is isolated from chassis and earth ground for flexible connections.

Safety & Warnings

Normal use of test equipment exposes users to dangers from electrical shock, especially when testing in areas with exposed high voltage. An electrical shock with 10 milliamps of current through the heart can stop most heartbeats. Voltages as low as 35 volts DC or AC rms are considered dangerous as they can produce a lethal current under certain conditions. Higher voltages pose a greater threat as they can more easily produce a lethal current. To reduce risk, users should follow these safety precautions:

1. The DC output of the power supply poses little danger of electrical shock. However, certain test conditions can create a high voltage shock hazard:
a. If testing “hot chassis” equipment, a serious shock hazard exists unless the equipment is unplugged or precautions in step 8 are followed.
b. If the equipment under test is “powered up” and uses high voltage, the power supply outputs may be floated to the potential at the connection point. Do not float the power supply output to more than 100 volts peak with respect to chassis or earth ground.
c. If the equipment under test is “off” but uses high voltage in normal operation, discharge high-voltage capacitors before making connections or tests.

2. Use only a polarized 3-wire AC outlet to ensure the power supply chassis, case, and ground terminal are connected to a good earth ground, reducing electrical shock danger.

3. Avoid exposing high voltage needlessly. Remove housings and covers only when necessary. Turn off equipment while making test connections in high-voltage circuits. Discharge high-voltage capacitors after removing power.

4. Familiarize yourself with the equipment being tested and the location of its high voltage points, but remember that high voltage may appear unexpectedly in defective equipment.
