The Hammarlund manual provides detailed instructions for installing electric clock timer kits in various communications receiver models, including HQ-100, HQ-100A, HQ-110, HQ-110A, HQ-170, HQ-170A, HQ-145X, and HQ-180. It covers the necessary tools and steps for installation, wiring information, and cautions to ensure proper setup and operation, while also advising on troubleshooting techniques to avoid overheating and ensuring the correct frequency is used for the clock kits.
Manual Overview
The Hammarlund manual provides detailed instructions for installing electric clock timer kits in specific communications receivers. The manual emphasizes the importance of using the correct kit based on the power frequency available, as using a 50-cycle clock on a 60-cycle power source, or vice versa, will result in inaccurate timekeeping. The installation process involves removing the receiver’s cabinet, detaching wires, and carefully handling the clock mechanism to avoid damage. The manual provides step-by-step guidance for soldering connections, specifying the use of a clean soldering iron and radio-grade rosin core solder. It highlights the need to avoid overheating connections to prevent damage to insulating materials. The manual also includes wiring information, advising on the correct wire lengths and connections for different receiver models. The instructions ensure that the clock mechanism is securely attached and properly integrated with the receiver’s existing components, emphasizing careful handling and precise adjustments.
Quick Issues Covered
- Diagnose power-up failures with clock timer kits installation issues.

Installation / Setup
The installation of Electric Clock Timer Kits involves several key steps. First, ensure the power cord is unplugged and all wires are disconnected from the chassis terminals. Carefully remove the receiver’s cabinet and position the receiver face down on a smooth surface to avoid damage. Use a small Phillips screwdriver to remove screws and nuts securing the plastic window and medallion plate to the front panel. For certain models, a short screw is used in the lower right corner.
When soldering, use a light, clean soldering iron with radio-grade rosin core solder, avoiding fluxes and overheating. Wiring involves unsoldering specific wires and connecting them to the clock assembly’s terminals, ensuring wires are cut to appropriate lengths with some slack. Securely tighten the shaft extension to the clock’s rear shaft using vise-grip pliers, avoiding bending. After wiring, ensure all connections are secure and free of foreign matter before reassembling the cabinet and securing it to the chassis.

Safety & Warnings
CAUTION: The same clock movement may not be used on 50 and 60 cycle. A 50 cycle clock will run fast when used on 60 cycle and a 60 cycle clock will run slow on 50 cycles. Please read these step-by-step instructions carefully and follow them in detail. In making solder connections, use a light, clean soldering iron and radio-grade rosin core solder only. DO NOT use fluxes of any kind in making solder connections. Do not overheat connections to avoid deteriorating associated insulating materials. Make certain that the power cord plug is removed from the power outlet. Carefully turn the receiver up on its face on top of a clean towel placed over a smooth working surface. This will prevent marring of the front panel, knobs, etc. When making soldered connections, be careful to prevent the hot soldering iron from contacting the plastic dial scale.
