Manual Overview

The Hallicrafters Super Skyrider models S-17 and SX-17 are six-band, 12-tube superheterodyne receivers designed for a wide frequency range. The manual emphasizes the importance of proper antenna setup for optimal performance, especially on higher frequency bands. Troubleshooting involves ensuring correct band selection and antenna connection, with adjustments made via the “RF Gain” and “AF Gain” controls to manage signal strength and noise. Calibration is crucial, with the main dial calibrated in kilocycles and megacycles, depending on the band. The “Carrier Level” meter should be set to zero with the antenna disconnected and the receiver detuned. For error diagnostics, the manual suggests using the “BFO Injection” control to adjust the beat oscillator output for clearer reception of weak signals. The receiver’s tube lineup includes stages for RF amplification, detection, and audio amplification, with iron-core transformers resonating at 465 KC for improved signal-to-noise ratio. The manual provides detailed instructions for setting the “AVC” switch and “BFO” control based on the type of signal being received, ensuring optimal performance and minimizing interference.

Quick Issues Covered

  • Calibration accuracy depends on band spread dial reading '0'.
  • Carrier level meter adjustment requires AVC switch 'ON'.
  • Separate coils for each band; unused coils are shorted.

Overview

The Super Skyrider Models S-17 and SX-17 are six-band, 12-tube superheterodyne receivers produced by the Hallicrafters Company. These models cover a range of frequencies from 545 KC to 62.00 MC using separate coils for each band, which allows for maximum signal energy transfer. Operation

To operate the Super Skyrider models S-17 and SX-17, follow these steps:

1. Plug the receiver’s power cord into a 110-volt, 60-cycle AC power socket.
2. Turn the “Tone” control to the right to power on the receiver.
3. While the receiver is warming up, turn the “RF Gain” and “AF Gain” knobs to the right.
4. The receiver is initially set to the highest frequency range. Adjust the “Bands” switch until the pointer on the calibrated main dial indicates the desired band.
5. Familiarize yourself with Bands No. 1 and No. 2 before attempting to use higher frequencies.
6. For distant or weak signals, use the “BFO Injection” control by turning the knob to the right. Once signals are located, turn it off to avoid a continuous whistle.
7. For CW transmissions, keep the “BFO Injection” control on and adjust the strength of the BFO output by turning the control to the right. Use the “Pitch Control” knob to adjust the beat note.
8. When the BFO control is on, the “AVC” switch should be in the “OFF” position.
9. For phone reception, keep the “AVC” switch in the “ON” position and turn the “RF Gain” control fully to the right until the snap switch on the rear is activated.
10. If the receiver blocks on strong signals with the “AVC” switch “OFF” and “RF Gain” wide open, manually adjust the “RF Gain” control to reduce sensitivity and prevent overloading.
11. Adjust both “RF Gain” and “AF Gain” controls to find the best signal-to-noise ratio.
12. The “Carrier Level” meter functions only when the “AVC” switch is “ON” and the “RF Gain” control is advanced to the right.
13. To set the carrier level meter, disconnect the antenna, detune the receiver from any signals, and adjust the control on the back of the chassis with the “AVC” switch “ON” and “RF Gain” wide open until the meter reads “0”.
14. For CW signal reception, keep the “AVC” switch “OFF” and the “BFO Injection” control on. Adjust the injection control for minimum output to copy weak signals. Turn the control to the right for maximum beat oscillator output.

Basic Usage and Operation Tips

To operate the SX-17, first connect a suitable antenna and power source. Use the band selector to choose the desired frequency range, then adjust the main tuning dial to zero in on the target station. Utilize the fine tuning control for precise frequency adjustments. Engage the BFO switch when listening to Morse code (CW) or single sideband (SSB) transmissions. Adjust volume and tone controls to optimize audio clarity. Regularly warm up the receiver before extended use to ensure stable operation.

Troubleshooting and Maintenance Notes

If you experience weak reception or distorted audio, verify antenna connections and ensure tubes are properly seated. Periodically clean the tuning capacitor and switches to prevent static and noise interference. Replace vacuum tubes as needed, especially if the receiver exhibits reduced sensitivity or intermittent operation. Consult the service manual for detailed alignment procedures and component testing. Avoid exposure to moisture and extreme temperatures to maintain optimal performance.

Safety Reminder

Always disconnect the SX-17 from the power source before performing any maintenance or repairs. Handle vacuum tubes carefully to prevent breakage and potential injury. Use caution when working with high voltages present inside the receiver chassis. Follow all recommended safety guidelines outlined in the service manual to ensure safe and reliable operation.
