Controls & Indicators

The front-panel controls and indicators of the 231A Multi-Network Cable Tester include an LED display for the sourcing end (Jack 1) and the receiving end (Jack 2), a power switch, an LED scanning mode switch, and a test switch for manual scanning. There are also RJ45 jacks and a ground LED for the receiving end.

Installation / Setup

Refer to the PDF for details.

Operation

The 231A Multi-Network Cable Tester operates in several modes to test different types of cables. For a Loopback Test using a 10BASE-T cable, plug one end of the cable into the transmitting RJ45 jack on the master unit and the other end into the receiving RJ45 jack. Turn on the power switch. In Auto mode, the upper row of LEDs will scan in sequence, while in Manual mode, the LED for pin 1 will light up. You can switch between Auto and Manual scanning by pressing the Auto/Manual button. Once both ends of the cable are properly connected, the second row of LEDs will illuminate according to the corresponding LEDs in the top row. The LED display will show the pin configuration status of the tested cable. If necessary, switch to Manual mode for pin-by-pin testing by pressing the Test button to advance to the next pin.

For a Modular Cable Test, follow the same steps as the 10BASE-T Cable Test. For a 10BASE2 Cable Test, use BNC adapter cables on both RJ45 jacks and connect the tested cable to each end of the adapters. Follow the same testing procedures as the 10BASE-T test. For a Remote Test, plug one end of the cable into the transmitting RJ45 jack on the master unit and the other end into the remote terminator. If the cable is installed in a patch panel or wall plate, use the included patch cable. Set the Auto/Manual switch to Auto mode for one-person testing and read the test results from the LED display on the remote terminator.
