Manual Overview
The Tektronix P6063B Probe service manual provides detailed instructions for troubleshooting, calibration, and adjustments necessary for optimal operation with oscilloscopes. The probe features a selectable attenuation of 1X or 10X, with a slide switch to adjust the volts/division readout circuitry. Troubleshooting focuses on ensuring proper probe compensation and minimizing circuit loading. The manual outlines procedures for low-frequency and high-frequency compensation, essential when transferring the probe between instruments or channels. For low-frequency compensation, the probe should be set to the 10X position and adjusted using a square wave to achieve a flat top display. High-frequency compensation requires a test setup with specific equipment, including a pulse generator and oscilloscope, to ensure the probe’s response does not deviate beyond specified limits. Adjustments involve fine-tuning resistors and capacitors within the compensation box to achieve the best waveform fidelity. Proper grounding and short connections are emphasized to prevent signal distortion and maintain measurement accuracy.
Quick Issues Covered

Operation
The P6063B Probe is a passive probe with selectable 1X or 10X attenuation, used with oscilloscopes having an input capacitance range of 15-24 pF and an input resistance of 1MΩ. The attenuation is selected via a slide switch on the probe body, which also adjusts the volts/division readout circuitry in compatible oscilloscopes. A ground reference push button allows users to obtain a ground reference with either attenuation setting and helps identify the trace reflecting the probe signal on a multitrace display. The probe features adjustable frequency compensation to match the oscilloscope input and is available in two lengths, terminating in a compensation box with a BNC connector.
For operation, the 1X switch position loads the circuit more than the 10X position, affecting the test point with the oscilloscope input impedance paralleled by the probe cable and compensation network capacitance. The 10X position, while having a 10MΩ input resistance, can load high-impedance circuits and distort signals, especially as frequency increases. Ground leads and probe tip connections should be kept short to maintain waveform fidelity.
Low-frequency compensation requires adjustment when transferring the probe between instruments or channels. The procedure involves setting the probe to the 10X position, using a square wave source, and adjusting for a flat top display. High-frequency compensation is necessary for observing signals above 3 MHz, requiring specific test equipment and adjustments to ensure minimal aberrations in the pulse response.
