Overview

The Tektronix P6022 Current Probe is designed to measure alternating current waveforms and is used in conjunction with devices like the Type 134 Current Probe Amplifier, 7A14 Current Probe Amplifier plug-in, or the P6022 Passive Termination to view and measure current waveforms on an oscilloscope. The manual primarily covers the use of the P6022 Current Probe with the Termination, while additional information for use with current probe amplifiers can be found in the respective amplifier instruction manuals. The manual includes specifications, electrical characteristics, environmental and physical characteristics, and operational instructions for the P6022 Current Probe.

Installation / Setup

When installing the P6022 Current Probe, it is necessary to use an oscilloscope with a vertical input impedance of one megohm. To increase the current sensitivity, the number of turns passing through the core of the probe can be increased, effectively forming a multi-turn primary winding. Care should be taken not to leave the probe clamped around a conductor when disconnecting the probe cable from the termination, as this can cause high voltage in the secondary winding and potentially damage the probe transformer. The probe is shielded to minimize interference from external magnetic fields, but strong fields may still affect measurements. In such cases, using two probes with a differential-input oscilloscope can help minimize interference.

Operation

The P6022 Current Probe, when used with a termination and an oscilloscope, is designed for measuring alternating current waveforms. An oscilloscope with a vertical input impedance of one megohm is required for its operation. To increase the current sensitivity, the number of turns passing through the core of the probe can be increased, which increases the secondary current. The probe is shielded to minimize interference from external magnetic fields, but strong fields may still affect measurements. In such cases, using two current probes and a differential-input oscilloscope can help minimize interference. When measuring high currents, the probe should not be left clamped around the conductor while disconnecting the probe cable from the termination to avoid damage. The insertion impedance of the probe should be considered when observing fast-rise signals.
