Blanking circuits are used to bias the CRT off during vertical and horizontal retrace to prevent retrace lines from being visible. Internal blanking pulses are necessary because the video signal’s blanking pulses might not be strong enough, and adjustments to the brightness control are critical without them. There are two basic types of internal retrace blanking circuits: older receivers use a common blanking amp combining vertical and horizontal pulses, while newer receivers use a “Sandcastle” pulse combining vertical and horizontal blanking with burst gate.

When troubleshooting blanking problems, it’s important to determine if the issue is truly a blanking problem. For TVs without Sandcastle, use an SC61 Waveform Analyzer to check the waveform and DC voltage at the blanker amp’s output. If the DC voltage is incorrect, the blanker stage is defective. If the DC voltage is correct but the pulse is missing, use a VA62A Video Analyzer to substitute the VERT SYNC or HORIZONTAL KEY PULSE to the blanker stage input. For TVs with Sandcastle, substitute the VA62A’s HORIZONTAL KEY PULSE at the video/chroma IC’s Sandcastle input to see if the picture returns. If a single horizontal line returns, the vertical sweep circuit is defective. If a raster returns without a picture, an RF or IF stage is defective. If neither returns but there is high voltage, there is a DC bias problem at the CRT or in a video amplifier stage. Use signal substitution and DC voltage measurements to troubleshoot these issues.
