Manual Overview

The Hallicrafters S-40 service manual provides detailed instructions for servicing this 9-tube superheterodyne radio receiver. For troubleshooting, it emphasizes the use of a signal generator and output meter for alignment, ensuring accurate frequency and sensitivity settings. The manual outlines the IF frequency as 455 kHz and provides specific selectivity and image ratio data for optimal performance. Calibration involves adjusting the sensitivity, volume, and tone controls, with settings provided for preliminary test operations. The manual includes a detailed procedure for restringing the main tuning and bandspread dial cords, requiring specific tools like an Allen wrench and a Spintite wrench. Board-level guidance is offered through a comprehensive parts list, detailing transformers, switches, and sockets, with part numbers for replacements. The manual also specifies rear panel connections and power supply requirements, both for AC and DC operations, ensuring technicians can maintain or repair the receiver effectively.

Quick Issues Covered

Operation

Model S-40 is a 9-tube commercial superheterodyne table model radio receiver with 4 bands of AM/CW reception. It includes features such as variable sensitivity control, optional AVC, noise limiting, BFO pitch, tone control, headset reception, external S meter use, standby operation, and bandspreading. The rear panel connections include an AC line cord with plug, antenna and ground connector strip, DC power input socket, and external S meter connector socket. For AC operation, it requires a 117-volt, 50/60 single-phase source with a power drain of 75 watts. For DC operation, it requires a filament of 6.3 volts at 5 amps and a B supply of 260 volts at 70 mA. The tube types and their functions are specified, including RF amplifier, mixer, IF amplifiers, detector, audio amplifier, audio power amplifier, gas gate and noise limiter, BFO, and power rectifier.

For preliminary test operation on the broadcast band, the control settings are as follows: Sensitivity at maximum clockwise, Band Selector counterclockwise to 1, Volume half clockwise, AVC at ON, Tuning to local station frequency, CW/AM at AM, Noise Limiter at OFF, Band Spread to 0 on the small dial, Tone to MED, Pitch Control in any position, Phones jack not used, and Standby/Receive at RECEIVE.

To restring dial cords, the front panel must be removed. A No. 6 Allen wrench is needed to loosen the set screws in the knobs. For the main tuning dial cord, a 25-inch length of 18 lb. test dial cord is used, starting at the tension spring of the main tuning capacitor drive pulley. For the bandspread tuning dial cord, a 35-inch length of dial cord is used, starting at a different position on the diagram.
