The manual provides guidance on using the CM2000 Computer Monitor Analyzer to test and troubleshoot high voltage regulation issues in computer monitors, focusing on maintaining consistent raster size despite changes in display brightness. It includes instructions for setting up the analyzer, testing high voltage regulation by switching between extreme brightness levels, and diagnosing potential problems in the monitor's voltage regulation circuits.

Manual Overview

The Sencore Tech Tip #195 provides guidance on troubleshooting high voltage regulation issues in computer monitors using the CM2000 Computer Monitor Analyzer. The manual emphasizes the importance of maintaining stable high voltage to prevent raster size changes with varying display brightness. The troubleshooting process involves connecting the CM2000 to the monitor and using the RASTER pattern to observe changes in raster size when switching between maximum (white) and minimum (black) brightness. If the raster size changes significantly, the manual advises measuring the DC voltage at the horizontal output transistor’s collector. If the voltage changes by more than 1%, the low voltage regulator circuit should be inspected. If the high voltage decreases by more than 3% during the test, the high voltage secondary of the horizontal output transformer should be checked, particularly the ground return capacitor. Proper calibration and adjustment steps are detailed, including using high voltage probes for accurate measurements and ensuring safety during testing.

Quick Issues Covered

Diagnose high voltage regulation by observing raster size changes.

Use CM2000 to test horizontal output transistor voltage stability.

Trace schematics for issues in high voltage secondary circuit.

Measuring high voltage exposes you to the possibility of a severe shock hazard if you do not follow careful test methods. Do not measure the high voltage until you completely read and understand the following warnings and instructions:

1. Never measure more than 2,000 volts without a high voltage probe. Use the TP212/10 kV probe to measure voltages in the 2,000 to 10,000 volt range. Use the HP200 50 kV probe for voltages near or over 10,000 volts.
2. Remove power to the circuit before connecting or disconnecting the high voltage probe.
3. Connect the ground lead so that it cannot become detached during the test. If the ground lead comes loose, immediately remove the AC power to the monitor.
4. Connect to the correct ground point. Some chassis use a separate ground for the high voltage.
5. Immediately remove power from the monitor if the high voltage probe comes loose. Do not touch the high voltage probe until power is removed.
6. If you must hold the high voltage probe, use extreme caution. Be sure the connections to the probe and ground lead are firmly attached. Hold the probe behind the molded safety rings to prevent the possibility of contacting the high voltage test point and to prevent arcing across the probe to your hand.

Manual Overview

The Sencore CM2000 Computer Monitor Analyzer is designed to troubleshoot and isolate defective stages in computer monitors. To connect the CM2000, ensure both the analyzer and monitor are powered off, then use the appropriate interface connector for the monitor’s SYNC & VIDEO OUTPUT jack. Always use an isolation transformer for safety. The analyzer supports various signal formats, which can be stored and recalled from memory locations. If the monitor’s format is unknown, consult the monitor’s manual and input the parameters using the CM2000’s controls. The CM2000 offers several video patterns for testing, including Raster, Dots, Circle, and Color Bars, each serving specific diagnostic purposes such as checking convergence, linearity, and color purity. Proper use of these patterns can help identify issues like misconvergence or power supply regulation problems. For multimode or multiscan monitors, test across all supported formats to ensure functionality.

Quick Issues Covered
