Safety & Warnings

There is always a danger present when testing electronic equipment. Unexpected high voltages can be present at unusual locations in defective equipment. Every precaution has been taken in the design of your instrument to ensure that it is as safe as possible. However, safe operation depends on you, the operator. Become familiar with the equipment you are working with, and observe the following safety precautions:

1. Never exceed the limits of this instrument as given in the specifications section and the additional special warnings in this manual.
2. A severe shock hazard can result if the chassis of the equipment being serviced is tied to the “hot” side of the AC line. An isolation transformer should always be used with hot-chassis equipment. Also, be sure that the top of your workbench and the floor underneath it are dry and made of non-conductive materials.
3. Remove the circuit power before making connections to high voltage points. If this cannot be done, be sure to avoid contact with other equipment or metal objects. Place one hand in your pocket and stand on an insulated floor to reduce the possibility of shock.
4. Discharge filter capacitors (after removing power) before connecting to any part of the circuit requiring power to be removed.
5. Be sure your equipment is in good order. Broken or frayed test leads can be extremely dangerous and can expose you to dangerous voltages.
6. Remove the test lead immediately after the test has been completed to reduce the possibility of shock.
7. Do not work alone when working on hazardous circuits. Always have another person close by in case of an accident. Remember, even a minor shock can be the cause of a more serious accident, such as falling against the equipment, or coming in contact with high voltages.
8. Improper Fuse(s) Void Warranty. Fuses are for your protection, so always replace fuse with proper type and current rating. The proper fuse type description is marked near the fuse holder and in the manual. Always:
A. Be sure you are replacing the right fuse. On units with more than one fuse, be sure you are placing the proper fuse value in the fuse holder.
B. Have the proper size replacement fuse in stock. With each new instrument, be sure to update your fuse inventory with any special value fuses your instrument may require.
9. Explanation of symbols:
This marking indicates that the operator must refer to an explanation in the operating instructions.
A terminal at which a voltage with respect to another terminal or part exists or may be adjusted to 1,000 volts or more.

Manual Overview

The Sencore TF26 Touch Tone Cricket service manual provides detailed guidance on operating and servicing the device, focusing on troubleshooting, error diagnostics, calibration, and board-level instructions. The TF26 is designed to test transistors and FETs without requiring prior knowledge of their basing or polarity. It uses a computer logic circuit to determine if a device will invert a square wave input, with six pushbuttons and a polarity switch facilitating all possible connection combinations. For troubleshooting, if the device does not chirp during a gain test, it is likely faulty. The manual advises retesting any transistor that tests bad in-circuit by removing it for an out-of-circuit test to confirm the diagnosis. Calibration involves static and electrical meter zeroing and leakage calibration. Board-level guidance includes disassembly instructions and meter and speaker replacement. The manual emphasizes safety precautions, such as discharging capacitors and using insulated floors to prevent shock.

Quick Issues Covered

Diagnose transistor issues with gain and leakage tests.

Calibrate static and electrical meter zero for accurate readings.

Use schematics for tracing shorted foils on circuit boards.

Overview

The TF26 Touch Tone Cricket is a transistor and FET tester that simplifies the testing process by eliminating the need for technical knowledge of basing diagrams or polarity. It uses a computer logic circuit to determine the condition of the device under test, providing an audio “chirp” and visual indication for good devices. The manual covers safety reminders, features, specifications, controls, connections, operation procedures for gain and leakage tests, circuit description, disassembly instructions, calibration, troubleshooting, and service information.

Controls & Indicators

The front-panel controls/indicators for the TF26 include a polarity switch, a function switch, and six pushbutton test switches. The polarity switch selects the test voltage polarity for the device under test, with options for NPN or PNP transistors and N channel or P channel FETs. The function switch allows selection between gain and leakage tests. The six pushbutton switches are used to apply the test voltage to the device’s elements.

Refer to the PDF for details.

Operation

The TF26 Touch Tone Cricket is designed to test transistors or FETs without needing to know their basing, polarity, or type. The device uses a computer logic circuit to determine if the transistor or FET will invert a square wave input. It features six pushbuttons and a polarity switch to provide all possible combinations of connections. To perform a gain test, the user should:

1. Remove power from the equipment containing the device being tested and discharge all power supply filter capacitors.
2. Turn on the TF26 and connect the test leads to the device’s leads. The basing of the transistor does not need to be determined as the touch tone circuit will handle it. If the device is a plug-in, the front panel mounted transistor socket can be used.
3. Select the GAIN test and press each of the six test buttons in turn. If the Cricket does not chirp and indicate in the good area of the meter, select the opposite polarity and press the test buttons again. If the Cricket still doesn’t chirp, the device is probably bad. It is advisable to retest the “bad” transistor after removing it from the circuit to isolate rare instances where a good transistor tests bad in-circuit.

In some cases, a good transistor may test bad in-circuit, particularly if the circuit’s base to collector resistance is less than 100 ohms or if large electrolytic capacitors are connected directly between the base or collector leads and ground. If a transistor tests bad in-circuit and good out-of-circuit, it may indicate other circuit problems, such as shorted foils on the board or large resistors connected to the transistor that have changed value or become shorted.

Operation

The Mighty Mite VII Tube Tester is simple to set up and operate for testing tubes. The basic steps for operation are as follows:

1. Plug the Mighty Mite into a grounded three-prong receptacle with 105 to 125 volts AC, 50 to 60 Hertz.
2. Use the set-up chart to find the tube’s settings, noting the positions for controls A (PIN ELIMINATION), B (FILAMENT), C (LOAD), D (SET UP), and the appropriate socket.
3. Adjust the PIN ELIMINATION switches as indicated. If no pins are listed, leave all switches up. Set the B, C, and D switches and insert the tube into the specified socket.
4. Set the Function switch to SHORTS and adjust the METER ZERO for a zero indication. Rotate the “D” switch through its positions and observe the SHORTS light. A light indicates a short of 300K or less. Some tubes may have normal shorts between heater and cathode, noted by an asterisk in the chart.
5. If the tube passes the SHORTS test, switch to EMISSION and read the emission quality on the meter’s top scale. Tubes in the questionable area may require further assessment.

Each tube section is tested independently, and the shorts test is only necessary once per tube.

Manual Overview

The Sencore Mighty Mite TC154 manual provides detailed instructions for setting up and troubleshooting tube testers. Technicians should set controls A, B, C, and D according to the provided chart and insert the tube into the indicated socket. For calibration, on models up to TC142, adjust the CAL control for full-scale meter reading, while on the TC154, use the SHORTS function and adjust the METER ZERO control. The SHORT TEST function helps identify shorted tubes, and any unexpected shorts should lead to immediate rejection to prevent transformer damage. Emission tests are conducted by switching to the EMISSION position and reading the meter scale. A LIFE TEST is recommended for detecting filament-sensitive cathodes by reducing the filament voltage and observing meter changes. The GRID LEAKAGE function checks for grid leakage, with readings in the BAD area indicating rejection. Special care is advised when handling magnoval based tubes to prevent socket damage.

Diagnoses tube shorts using the 'Stethoscopic' shorts test feature.

Calibrates meter zero on TC154 for accurate shorts testing.

Includes schematics for efficient circuit tracing and troubleshooting.

Overview

Sencore’s Mighty Mite models TC114, TC130, TC136, TC142, and TC154 are tube checkers designed for fast and accurate testing of over 3,000 tubes. They feature emission checks at full rated cathode current, a 100 megohms grid leakage test, and a “stethoscopic” shorts test. The devices are portable and housed in rugged all-steel cases. The manual provides operating instructions, including setting controls according to a set-up chart, performing shorts and emission tests, and conducting a life test for filament-sensitive cathodes. It also covers grid leakage testing and specific instructions for handling magnoval based tubes.

Operation

Set controls A, B, C, and D according to the set-up chart and insert the tube in the socket indicated in the chart. Use the cap lead if the tube has a top cap connection. On Mighty Mites up to TC142, set the FUNCTION switch to the CAL position and adjust the CAL control so that the meter reads full scale (marked CAL). On the TC154 Mighty Mite, press the SHORTS function pushbutton, and adjust the METER ZERO control to position the meter pointer to the extreme left-hand edge of the meter scale. Switch to the SHORT TEST or SHORTS function and rotate the D switch through all positions. The SHORT IND. or SHORTS light will glow if a tube is shorted or has excessive leakage. Tubes marked with an asterisk in the set-up chart have internal connections that will show up as a short on the D switch positions indicated. The H-K setting is for heater to cathode leakage (or short) test. Any tube that shows a short not indicated as normal should be rejected immediately, as possible damage to the Mighty Mite transformer will result from checking a shorted tube for emission. Switch to the EMISSION position, and return the D switch to the setting indicated in the set-up book. Read the top BAD ? GOOD scale on the meter, and reject any tube that reads in the BAD area of the meter scale. Occasionally, you will encounter a tube which has a FILAMENT SENSITIVE cathode. This tube will test good in your Mighty Mite when operated at the rated filament voltage but may not work in circuit. This is especially true of tubes in series string receivers. If the line voltage is low, or one or more of the tubes in the series string is dropping a higher than normal voltage, the emission level of the cathode drops and the circuit ceases to function. The test you should make on every tube to determine if it has a FILAMENT SENSITIVE cathode is a LIFE TEST. When you test the tube for emission and it reads in the GOOD area of the meter, switch the FILAMENT (A) switch DOWN one step (i.e., 6V to 4-5V). The meter indication of a good tube will not change, or change only slightly, but a filament sensitive tube will drop off quickly to the (?) or BAD area. If the meter reading falls off but still remains in the GOOD area, the tube is still acceptable, but once the meter reading hits the question mark (?) or BAD area, this tube should be replaced. You should run this quick LIFE TEST on all tubes you check. This will give you double insurance that the tube will work in the circuit. Switch to the GRID LEAKAGE function, and read the bottom GOOD ? BAD meter scale. Reject any tube that reads up into the BAD area of the meter. When replacing a costly horizontal output tube in a television receiver, it is a good idea to check the horizontal oscillator tube for emission, filament sensitive cathode, and for warm-up time. If the horizontal oscillator tube is slower in warming up due to a weak cathode or filament sensitive cathode, the output tube will draw heavy current and its life will be shortened considerably. Checking the warm-up time of the oscillator tube and making sure that it is as fast or faster than the output tube can reduce the chance of a call back later for the same trouble and keep your customer’s confidence high in your service ability.
The manual includes the following safety warnings and precautions:

1. Any tube that shows a short not indicated as normal should be rejected immediately to prevent possible damage to the Mighty Mite transformer when checking a shorted tube for emission.
2. When checking magnoval based tubes in socket number 5, do not insert the tube fully into the socket to avoid spreading the contacts and causing damage. Instead, hold the tube while making firm contact between the tube pins and socket contacts for the test.

Manual Overview

The Sencore Mighty Mite tube checker manual provides detailed instructions for setting up and troubleshooting models TC114, TC130, TC136, TC142, and TC154. The manual emphasizes the importance of following the set-up chart to configure controls A, B, C, and D correctly and using the appropriate socket for tube testing. For calibration, the FUNCTION switch should be set to CAL, and the CAL control adjusted for full-scale meter reading. The SHORT TEST function checks for shorts or excessive leakage, with specific D switch positions indicating normal internal connections. Tubes showing unexpected shorts should be rejected to prevent transformer damage. The EMISSION test evaluates tube quality on a BAD to GOOD scale, and a LIFE TEST is recommended for detecting filament-sensitive cathodes. The GRID LEAKAGE function assesses grid leakage, rejecting tubes in the BAD range. Special instructions are provided for magnoval-based tubes to prevent socket damage. The manual also advises checking horizontal oscillator tubes in televisions to ensure proper warm-up time and prevent premature failure of output tubes.

Quick Issues Covered

Diagnose emission issues with full rated cathode current tests.

Identify shorts using stethoscopic shorts test and D switch positions.

Use schematics for circuit tracing and socket connections.

Overview

The product is the SENCORE Mighty Mite tube checker, available in models TC114, TC130, TC136, TC142, and TC154. It is designed to test over 3,000 tubes for emission at full rated cathode current, grid leakage, and shorts. The device is portable, housed in a rugged all-steel case, and includes features like a “stethoscopic” shorts test and a 100 megohms grid leakage test. The manual provides operating instructions, including setting controls according to a set-up chart, performing various tests (emission, shorts, grid leakage), and conducting a life test for filament-sensitive cathodes. It also includes specific instructions for testing magnoval based tubes.

On the TC154 Mighty Mite, press the SHORTS function pushbutton and adjust the METER ZERO control to position the meter pointer to the extreme left-hand edge of the meter scale.

Switch to the SHORT TEST or SHORTS function and rotate the D switch through all positions. The SHORT IND. or SHORTS light will glow if a tube is shorted or has excessive leakage. Tubes marked with an asterisk (*) in the set-up chart have internal connections that will show up as a short on the D switch positions indicated.

Safety & Warnings

The manual includes the following safety warnings and precautions:

1. Any tube that shows a short not indicated as normal should be rejected immediately to prevent possible damage to the Mighty Mite transformer from checking a shorted tube for emission.

2. When checking magnoval based tubes in socket number 5, do not insert the tube fully into the socket to avoid spreading the contacts and causing damage. Instead, hold the tube while making firm contact between the tube pins and socket contacts for the test.
