The manual for the HA2500 Substitute B+ Supply explains how to set up and operate the device to test horizontal output stages and high voltage/deflection regulators by substituting the chassis B+ voltage, allowing for the identification of component failures without damaging the power supply. It also provides troubleshooting tips, such as starting with reduced voltage and gradually increasing it to full operation, and emphasizes the importance of safely connecting and disconnecting the test leads to prevent electrical hazards.
Manual Overview
The Sencore HA2500 Substitute B+ Supply manual provides detailed guidance on using the device to troubleshoot and isolate issues in horizontal output stages and high voltage/deflection regulators. The Substitute B+ Supply allows testing at full operating voltages independently of the chassis B+ power supply, helping to identify component failures without risking damage to the power supply. Technicians should start with the VOLTS control set to “OFF” when connecting or disconnecting the B+ supply leads. The device outputs 30 to 180 volts and includes a POWER LIMIT control to adjust the maximum power output, which is crucial for preventing damage during testing. The manual emphasizes the importance of opening the chassis B+ voltage path before substitution to avoid damage. The digital display provides real-time voltage and current readings, ensuring accurate monitoring. Technicians are advised to start testing at reduced voltage levels and gradually increase to normal operating levels, using the HA2500’s dynamic tests to assess the horizontal output stage’s performance. Safety precautions are highlighted due to the potential shock hazard from voltages up to 180 volts.
Quick Issues Covered

Operation
The HA2500’s Substitute B+ Supply is a tool used for testing and troubleshooting horizontal output stages and high voltage/deflection regulators in CRT video displays. It allows for the substitution of the chassis B+ voltage, enabling the identification of high voltage component problems without risking damage to the chassis power supply. The Substitute B+ Supply is a variable DC power supply adjustable from 30 to 180 volts and is designed to substitute for the full range of chassis B+ power supply voltages.
To use the Substitute B+ Supply, the following steps should be followed:
1. Ensure the VOLTS control is set to “OFF” when not using the Substitute B+ Supply, and when connecting and disconnecting the B+ SUPPLY LEADS to the chassis or B+ SUPPLY OUTPUT Jacks.
2. Open the chassis B+ power supply path to the horizontal output stage to prevent the chassis B+ voltage from reaching it.
3. Connect the B+ SUPPLY LEAD clips from the B+ SUPPLY OUTPUT Jack to the chassis.
4. Start at a reduced voltage or power level and slowly increase the voltage or power until full operation of the horizontal output stage is reached or defects are observed.
5. Use the VOLTS and POWER LIMIT controls to adjust the output to desired levels, starting with the VOLTS control to “OFF” and setting the POWER LIMIT control to a power setting near the anticipated power demand.
6. Use the HA2500’s Dynamic Tests to determine abnormal or normal operation of the horizontal output stage when substituting for the chassis B+ voltage.
The Substitute B+ Supply outputs over 80 watts for voltages greater than 40 volts, with current limited to 2 amps for voltages between 30 and 40 volts. The power output can be adjusted using the POWER LIMIT control, and a LIMITING light indicates when the output voltage times current exceeds the POWER LIMIT setting. The fluorescent digital display shows the voltage and current outputs simultaneously.

Safety & Warnings
The HA2500’s Substitute B+ Supply should only be used by technically qualified persons who understand the potential shock hazard of voltages up to 180 volts. Voltages greater than 30 volts DC can deliver a lethal electrical shock. It is important not to come in contact with the B+ SUPPLY OUTPUT Jack, B+ SUPPLY TEST LEAD clips, or B+ supply circuit points when using the Substitute B+ Supply.
