The Sencore Mighty Mite setup book provides detailed instructions for setting up and operating the TC142 tube checker, including how to adjust controls and interpret meter readings for emission and grid leakage tests. It also includes troubleshooting tips for detecting shorts and filament sensitivity in tubes, ensuring accurate testing and reliable performance.
Manual Overview
The Sencore TC142 Mighty Mite manual provides detailed instructions for setting up and troubleshooting tube testers. The manual emphasizes the importance of proper calibration and adjustment, instructing users to set controls A, B, C, and D according to the setup chart and adjust the CAL control for full-scale meter reading. For diagnostics, the manual outlines procedures for emission, grid leakage, and short tests. The short test involves rotating switch D through all positions to identify shorts or excessive leakage, with specific guidance on disregarding faint flashes or internal connections that may appear as shorts. The manual also highlights the need for a filament sensitivity test, advising technicians to perform a life test by reducing the filament voltage and observing meter response. For board-level guidance, the manual warns against fully inserting magnoval-based tubes into sockets to prevent damage. It provides socket-specific instructions for testing these tubes. The manual ensures technicians can accurately diagnose and maintain tube functionality across various applications.
Quick Issues Covered
- Diagnose power-up failures with tube socket and switch settings.
- Identify grid leakage and shorts using emission and short tests.
- Use schematics for efficient circuit tracing and fault isolation.
Overview
The Mighty Mite is a universal set-up book designed for various models of tube checkers, specifically the TC114, TC130, TC136, TC142, and TC154. It is known as America’s most popular tube tester, offering fast and accurate results. The product is compact, weighing only 9 lbs, and is constructed with rugged steel, making it suitable for both shop and home use. The manual provides operating instructions for setting controls and testing tubes for emission, grid leakage, and shorts. It also includes additional tests for filament sensitivity and guidelines for handling magnoval based tubes to prevent socket damage.

Operation
Set controls A, B, C, and D according to the set-up chart and insert the tube in the socket as indicated in the chart. Use the plate cap lead if the tube has a plate cap. Set the FUNCTION switch to ‘CAL’ and adjust the CAL control so that the meter reads full scale (marked cal.). Set the FUNCTION switch to EMISSION and read the top scale on the meter. If the tube reads good emission, set the FUNCTION switch to GRID LEAKAGE and read the lower scale to check grid leakage.
For the SHORT TEST, set the FUNCTION switch to SHORT TEST and rotate switch D through all positions. The short indicator light will glow on both electrodes if the tube is shorted or has excessive leakage. Disregard any faint flashes in the short indicator. Tubes marked with an asterisk (*) in the set-up chart have internal connections that will show up as a short on settings indicated. The H-K setting is for heater to cathode leakage (or short) test.
The Mighty Mite tests tubes under the maximum specified filament voltage and under full rated cathode load current. If a tube is FILAMENT SENSITIVE, it may show good on the meter but may not work in the circuit. To test for FILAMENT SENSITIVITY, perform a LIFE TEST by switching the FILAMENT (A) switch DOWN one step (e.g., 6V to 4-5V). A good tube will not cause the meter needle to move, but a filament-sensitive tube will cause the meter reading to drop quickly. If the meter reading falls off but remains in the GOOD area, the tube is still acceptable. If it hits the question mark or BAD area, the tube should be replaced.
When replacing a costly horizontal output tube in a television receiver, check the horizontal oscillator tube for emission, filament-sensitive cathode, and warm-up time. This ensures that the oscillator tube warms up as fast or faster than the output tube, reducing the chance of a call back for the same issue and maintaining customer confidence.
For magnoval based tubes, check them in socket number 12 on the Mighty Mite V and in socket number 5 on the Mighty Mites II, III, and IV. Do not insert the tube fully into the socket as the pins are larger in diameter than novar based tubes. Hold the tube while making firm contact between the tube pins and socket contacts to avoid damage.

Basic Usage & Operation Tips
To use the TC142 Mighty Mite Set-Up Book Tube CHART effectively, first identify the tube type you need to test or calibrate. Locate the corresponding chart within the manual to understand the expected operating parameters and performance curves. Use this information alongside your tube tester to adjust settings and verify tube condition. Always handle tubes carefully to avoid damage, and ensure your test equipment is properly grounded to prevent electrical hazards.
Troubleshooting & Maintenance Notes
If the charts become difficult to read or the manual shows signs of wear, consider using a protective sleeve or digital copy to preserve the information. For accurate testing, regularly calibrate your tube tester and verify connections. If unexpected readings occur, double-check tube orientation and test equipment functionality. Keep the manual away from moisture and extreme temperatures to maintain its longevity.
Safety Reminder
When working with vacuum tubes and test equipment, always exercise caution. Tubes can become hot during operation and may contain hazardous materials. Ensure your work area is well-ventilated and avoid direct contact with high-voltage components. Disconnect power before performing any maintenance or adjustments to prevent electrical shock.
