The manual for the Sencore Mighty Mite tube testers, including models TC114, TC130, TC136, TC142, and TC154, provides detailed instructions for setting up and operating the device, including how to perform emission, grid leakage, and short tests on tubes. It also includes troubleshooting tips, such as conducting a life test for filament sensitivity and checking magnoval based tubes without damaging the socket.
Manual Overview
The Sencore TC136 Mighty Mite tube tester manual provides detailed instructions for setting up and operating the device, focusing on troubleshooting, diagnostics, and calibration. The tester is designed for various tube types, with controls A, B, C, and D set according to the provided chart. Calibration involves adjusting the CAL control to ensure the meter reads full scale. The tester checks tube emission and grid leakage, with the function switch set accordingly. For short tests, the switch is set to SHORT TEST, and any significant glow in the short indicator suggests a short or excessive leakage. Tubes with internal connections may show as shorted under certain settings, which should be disregarded. The manual emphasizes performing a life test for filament sensitivity by reducing the filament voltage and observing the meter’s response. Magnoval-based tubes require careful handling to avoid socket damage. The manual also advises checking horizontal oscillator tubes in televisions to prevent premature failure of costly output tubes.
Quick Issues Covered
- Diagnose grid leakage with GRID LEAKAGE function switch setting.
- Calibrate meter using CAL function for accurate tube readings.
- Refer to schematics for circuit tracing and troubleshooting.

Operation
The operation of the Mighty Mite tube tester involves setting controls A, B, C, and D according to a set-up chart and inserting the tube into the indicated socket. If the tube has a plate cap, a plate cap lead should be used. The FUNCTION switch is set to ‘CAL’ and the CAL control is adjusted so that the meter reads full scale. The FUNCTION switch is then set to EMISSION to read the top scale on the meter. If the tube shows good emission, the FUNCTION switch is set to GRID LEAKAGE to check the lower scale for grid leakage.
For a SHORT TEST, the FUNCTION switch is set to SHORT TEST, and switch D is rotated through all positions. The short indicator light will glow if the tube is shorted or has excessive leakage. Faint flashes in the short indicator should be disregarded. Tubes with internal connections may show up as a short on certain settings, which is indicated in the set-up chart.
Additional tests include checking for filament sensitivity, which involves performing a LIFE TEST by switching the FILAMENT (A) switch down one step after testing for emission. A good tube will not affect the meter reading, while a filament sensitive tube will cause the meter reading to drop. If the reading falls but remains in the GOOD area, the tube is acceptable. If it drops to the BAD area, the tube should be replaced.
When checking magnoval based tubes, they should not be fully inserted into the socket to avoid spreading the contacts. Instead, the tube should be held to ensure firm contact during the test.
