The manual for the Sencore CR143 CRT setup chart provides detailed instructions on testing color tracking and emission for CRTs, including setting the function switch to emission, adjusting G1 bias control, and using the color tracking push button to ensure meter readings fall within specified limits. It also covers troubleshooting steps, such as adjusting the G2 screen controls and checking for sufficient range, to determine if a CRT is functioning within manufacturer limits or if it may be defective.
Manual Overview
The Sencore CR143 CRT setup chart manual provides detailed instructions for testing and calibrating color CRTs, focusing on emission tests and color tracking. To test color tracking, technicians should first ensure all G2 screen controls remain as set during the emission test. The FUNCTION switch should be set to EMISSION, and the G1 bias control to 50 volts. The COLOR TRACKING button is then pressed, and the COLOR CAL control is adjusted to center the meter reading. Each gun is tested by switching the COLOR GUN switch and adjusting the G2 SCREEN control until the meter reads at the cutoff line. If the G2 control range is insufficient, the G1 bias can be reduced but not below 35 volts, as a lower requirement may indicate a defective tube. The emission test button is pressed to read emission levels on the GOOD-BAD scale. For successful tracking, all guns should read within the COLOR TRACK scale, with the highest reading not exceeding 1.5 times the lowest. Calibration ensures the G2 voltage for each screen remains within specified limits, checked by observing the G2 control settings.
Quick Issues Covered
- Diagnose CRT emission issues using GOOD-BAD meter scale.
- Adjust G2 SCREEN controls for color gun emission balance.
- Perform color tracking test with COLOR TRACKING push button.

Operation
Test for color tracking by following these steps:
1. Set the FUNCTION switch to EMISSION and the G1 bias control to 50 volts.
2. Push the COLOR TRACKING button and adjust the COLOR CAL control so the meter reads in the middle of the scale. Hold the button down and switch the COLOR GUN switch to all three positions. Leave it on the position that indicates the highest on the meter.
3. Readjust the COLOR CAL control so the meter reads at the color cal line.
4. Switch the COLOR GUN switch to the other two guns. The meter readings should stay within the COLOR TRACK scale. If not, the CRT is outside of the manufacturer’s limits.
For the emission test and balancing guns for the tracking test:
1. Leave all three G2 SCREEN controls where they were set for the emission test.
2. Set the COLOR GUN switch to one of the guns and adjust the associated G2 SCREEN control until the meter reads at the cut-off line. If there is insufficient range of the G2 control with 50 volts bias on G1, reduce the bias until there is sufficient range. If the G1 required is much less than 35 volts, the tube is probably defective due to low emission.
3. Push the emission test button and read emission on the GOOD-BAD meter scale.
4. Perform step 2 with the other two guns. If all three guns have good emission, proceed with the tracking test.
When all three guns indicate within the COLOR TRACK scale, the highest indicating gun should be no more than 1.5 times the lower reading gun. Some CRT manufacturers also require that the G2 voltage used on each screen stay within these limits. The highest G2 voltage required should not be more than 1.5 times the lowest G2 voltage required.
