Safety & Warnings

The HP 8153A Lightwave Multimeter is a Class 1 instrument with an exposed metal chassis directly connected to earth via the power supply cable. Before operation, review the instrument and manual, including the red safety page, for safety markings and instructions to ensure safe operation and maintain the instrument in a safe condition. Some circuits are powered whenever the instrument is connected to the AC power source. To disconnect from line power, disconnect the power cord either at the rear power-inlet or at the AC line-power source, ensuring one is always accessible. If in a cabinet, disconnect from line power by the system’s line-power switch.

To avoid hazardous electrical shock, do not perform electrical tests when there are signs of shipping damage to any portion of the outer enclosure. The instrument can operate from any single-phase AC power source supplying between 100V and 240V at a frequency from 40 to 60Hz, with a maximum power consumption of 55VA. The fuse used is T1A / 250V (slow), and changing it should be done by a qualified electrician or HP service personnel.

The instrument has a three-wire power cable that earths the cabinet when connected to an appropriate AC power receptacle. Insert the power cable plug only into a socket outlet with a protective earth contact, and do not use an extension cord without a protective conductor. Before switching on, the protective earth terminal must be connected to a protective conductor using the supplied power cord. Interrupting the protective earth connection intentionally is prohibited.

Work involving the power cable should be carried out by a qualified electrician, observing all local electrical codes. If the plug does not fit the power outlet, or if the cable is to be attached to a terminal block, cut the cable at the plug end and rewire it. The plug should meet local safety requirements with adequate load-carrying capacity, a ground connection, and a cable clamp.

The HP 8153A is not designed for outdoor use. To prevent potential fire or shock hazard, do not expose it to rain or excessive moisture. A maximum of 15V can be applied as an external voltage to any of the BNC connectors.
