Operation

The Heathkit Model AT-1 Transmitter can be operated on amateur bands of 80, 40, 20, 15, 11, and 10 meters using crystal or VFO control. For operation, the operator should determine the frequency range of the desired band and permissible emission type. The transmitter allows for crystal operation and can also be controlled by a VFO by plugging the VFO output into the crystal socket.

For 80 meter operation, plug in a crystal with a frequency between 3,500 and 4,000 kc, turn on the power switch, and allow the transmitter to warm up. With the STANDBY switch in the STANDBY position, turn the meter switch to PLATE, then turn on the STANDBY switch, depress the key, and quickly tune the OUTPUT control for a dip. Adjust the antenna coupler for a rise in plate current, continuously adjusting the OUTPUT control for resonance. The final current reading should be about 60 to 80 milliamperes.

For 40 meter operation, plug in a crystal between 3,500 and 3,650 kc, turn the meter switch to GRID, turn the STANDBY switch on, depress the key, and quickly tune the DRIVER control for maximum meter reading. Then, turn the meter switch to PLATE, depress the key, and tune for a dip. Tune the antenna as outlined for 80 meter operation.

For 20, 15, 11, and 10 meter operation, use the same tuning method as for the 40 meter band, with appropriate crystal frequencies. The 15 and 11 meter bands are operated on the 10 meter position of the band switch.
