Safety & Warnings

Audio frequency voltages up to 150 volts may be present at the 600 ohm (SPKR) terminals under certain conditions. Turn the AUDIO GAIN control to 0 before touching these terminals. Never remove the sheet metal covers from the connector cable terminal strips without first detaching the plug from the a-c power line (or disconnecting the batteries); turning the OFF-ON switch to OFF is not enough. With dust cover and bottom plate removed from the receiver, great care must be exercised, as 250 volts direct current are present at several points on top of the chassis, and d-c voltages up to 400 and a-c voltages up to 260 exist at several points underneath the chassis. Still greater care must be taken when working on the power supply unit with the bottom plate off. Here are d-c voltages of over 400, and a-c potentials up to 900 volts. There is no high-voltage d-c electrical shock hazard during normal operation of this equipment after it has been properly connected and installed.

Hammarlund RA-94-A Instruction Service Manual Overview

The Hammarlund RA-94-A is a high-performance communications receiver designed for both amateur radio enthusiasts and professional operators. Renowned for its reliable signal reception and robust construction, this device covers a wide range of frequencies, making it ideal for shortwave listening, broadcast monitoring, and general radio communications. The RA-94-A combines precision tuning with durable components to ensure consistent performance in various operating environments.

Main Features and Specifications

  • Frequency Coverage: 540 kHz to 30 MHz
  • Superheterodyne receiver design for improved selectivity
  • Multiple bandwidth filters for clear signal reception
  • Built-in BFO (Beat Frequency Oscillator) for CW and SSB reception
  • Analog tuning dial with calibrated frequency markings
  • Robust metal chassis for enhanced durability
  • External antenna and speaker connections
  • Power requirements: 110-120V AC

Basic Usage and Operation Tips

To operate the Hammarlund RA-94-A, first connect a suitable antenna and ensure the receiver is properly grounded. Power on the unit and allow a brief warm-up period for optimal performance. Use the tuning dial to select the desired frequency, and adjust the bandwidth filters to improve signal clarity. Engage the BFO switch when listening to Morse code (CW) or single sideband (SSB) transmissions. Regularly monitor the volume and tone controls to maintain comfortable listening levels.

Troubleshooting and Maintenance Notes

If you experience weak or distorted signals, verify antenna connections and check for any loose wiring. Periodically clean the tuning dial and control knobs to prevent dust buildup that can affect operation. For persistent issues, consult the service manual’s alignment and calibration procedures to ensure the receiver’s internal components are functioning correctly. Avoid opening the chassis unless qualified, as high voltages inside can be hazardous.

Safety Reminder

Always disconnect the receiver from the power source before performing any maintenance or inspection. Use caution when handling internal components, as some parts may retain electrical charge. Operate the device in a dry, well-ventilated area to prevent overheating and reduce the risk of electric shock. Following these safety guidelines will help ensure safe and reliable operation of your Hammarlund RA-94-A receiver.
