Manual Overview

The Hammarlund HX-50 ZBZ installation manual provides detailed instructions for setting up and operating the ZBZ system, which facilitates rapid zero beating of the HX-50 transmitter frequency with a received signal. The operation involves switching to specific terminals to automatically place the transmitter in “calibrate” mode, allowing for zero beat detection without adjusting other controls. The manual outlines the theory of operation, explaining the relay’s role in disabling certain circuits and adjusting signal paths to achieve the desired calibration state. Installation instructions include removing specific resistors, repositioning wires, and mounting the ZBZ relay, with references to a pictorial installation diagram for visual guidance. The manual emphasizes the importance of checking and rebalancing the carrier balance if necessary. A parts list is provided, detailing components like resistors, capacitors, and wires required for installation. The manual does not include specific troubleshooting flow or error codes but focuses on the installation and operational setup of the ZBZ system.

Quick Issues Covered

  • Diagnose power-up failures by checking relay K1 connections.
  • Calibrate transmitter by adjusting R107 and VOX trip relay settings.
  • Use schematics for circuit tracing of ZBZ relay installation.

Installation / Setup

The installation instructions for the HX-50 ZBZ include several steps involving wiring and component placement. Key steps include removing resistor R107 from pin 4 of V101 and grounding it, unsoldering the gray wire from the K102 relay coil terminal and connecting it to the ZBZ relay terminal #1, and installing a 6.8K, 1 watt resistor between pin 5 of V109 and an unused lug of a terminal strip. The ZBZ relay K1 should be mounted to a bracket, and the microphone cable clamp should be removed to mount the relay to the shield plate. Additionally, a 1.5K, 1/2 watt resistor and a 10 PF capacitor should be soldered to the relay terminals, along with various wires. The installation should be completed according to the provided installation drawing, and carrier balance should be checked and adjusted if necessary. An operating switch for the ZBZ, which is not supplied, should be connected between the selected TB101 terminal and ground.

Operation

Upon closing the switch contacts, the transmitter is automatically placed in “calibrate” mode without the necessity of operating any other switches or controls. After finding zero beat between the received signal and the transmitter, releasing the switch makes the transmitter immediately ready.
