Operation
The operation of the SKY CHALLENGER involves connecting a permanent magnet speaker to the terminal strip marked 5000 ohms on the back of the chassis. For a load of 500 ohms, connect to the terminal strip marked 500 ohms. The EXT. SW. terminal strip can be used to turn the set on and off when connected to a relay or external switch. The antenna and ground binding post strip is located on the back left of the chassis. For a doublet antenna, remove the jumper from AZ to G and connect the two wires to Al and AZ. For a conventional flat top and lead-in antenna, connect the lead-in to Al, ensuring the jumper is connected to A2 and G. Antenna setup is crucial for optimal performance, especially on high frequency ranges.
To operate, plug the receiver into a 60 cycle, 110 volt AC power socket. Turn the “Tone” control to the right to connect to the AC line. During warm-up, turn the “R.F. Gain” and “A.F. Gain” knobs to the right. The receiver is shipped with the band-change switch set to the highest frequency range. Adjust the “Bands” switch to select the desired band, and use the “BAND SET” knob to reach the desired frequency.
