Operation

The Model HT 7 Frequency Standard is designed to operate on 110-125 volt, 50-60 cycle alternating current. To use it, connect the “A” terminal to the antenna post of a receiver and the “G” terminal to the receiver ground post. Once familiar with the unit, the wire can be more loosely coupled to the receiver by twisting it around the antenna lead until the desired coupling is achieved.

For operation at 1000 KC, set the Frequency-HO switch to the 1000 KC position after placing the OFF-ON switch in the ON position. Turn the band switch on the Standard to #1 band. The receiver should be used for standard broadcast band coverage during initial adjustments. With the oscillator in the receiver turned on, a strong signal at 100 KC should be heard in the broadcast band and at every 1000 KC throughout other tuning ranges of the receiver.

For operation at 100 KC, place the crystal switch at the 100 KC position. A signal from the standard will be heard every 100 KC on the receiver.

To accurately adjust the standard, follow these steps: Place the crystal switch at the 1000 KC position, turn off the beat frequency oscillator in the receiver, tune in a broadcast station transmitting on an even 10 KC frequency, and tune the signal accurately. Place the crystal switch in the 100 KC position, and adjust the “Crystal Tuning” control slowly until the beat is reached. If the receiver has a reference indicator, adjustments can be more accurately made by watching the pulse of the indicator as the beat is approached.

The 100 KC position has a temperature drift of about 10 cycles per megacycle per degree centigrade. Temperature variations in normal service cause frequency variations of approximately 10 parts per million. The harmonics of the 100 KC oscillator become weak above 7 megacycles, so a harmonic amplifier with a tunable output circuit is provided to raise the output level for use through the 30 MC band.

With the crystal switch set at the 10 KC position, a multivibrator locked to crystal frequency provides output signals heard every 10 KC apart between the 100 KC points. The adjustment screw on the rear of the unit selects the sub-harmonic of 100 KC on which the multivibrator operates. If improperly adjusted, there may be more or less than 9 signals between 100 KC points. Adjust this control until 9 signals are heard between the 100 KC markers. This adjustment is originally made at the factory, so further adjustment is unlikely to be necessary. Once the multivibrator is locked to the proper sub-harmonic, the output will be stable.

The HT 7 is useful for providing an accurate source of signal energy for receiver alignment. When aligning receivers, connect the standard to the receiver as outlined, establish the 1000 KC marker positions, and then align the receiver accurately from the 100 KC signals it delivers. The HT 7 is also helpful for frequency measurement purposes by interpolating between dial divisions and the frequency of the standard.
