Manual Overview

The RV-4C Remote VFO is designed for use with TR-3, TR-4, and TR-4C transceivers, allowing operation on a frequency different from the transceiver’s VFO setting within the same band. It features a stable solid-state VFO, a cathode follower, and a 5-inch speaker. The RV-4C has four function positions: OFF, RCV, RCV/XMIT, and XMIT, each determining the control of transmission and reception frequencies. Installation requires connecting the RV-4C to the appropriate jack on the transceiver, with specific instructions for TR-3 and TR-8 models. Troubleshooting primarily involves tube substitution, and the unit should be returned to the factory for alignment if issues persist. The only adjustable component is coil L2, which can be tuned for optimal performance. Voltage and resistance charts are provided for diagnostics, but servicing should only be attempted by those familiar with electronic circuitry. The RV-4C is covered by a 90-day warranty, excluding tubes and RF output transistors.

Quick Issues Covered

  • Diagnose VFO calibration errors using voltage and resistance charts.
  • Identify power-up failures with schematic circuit tracing.
  • Adjust coil L2 for optimal S meter reading.

Overview

The RV—4C Remote VFO is designed for use with TR—3, TR—4, and TR—4C transceivers. It allows for reception, transmission, or both on a frequency different from the transceiver’s VFO setting but within the same band. The RV—4C features a stable permeability-tuned solid-state VFO, a cathode follower, control circuitry, and a 5-inch 4 Ohm speaker. It has a matching cabinet for the transceiver and can house an AC—4 (or AC—3) power supply. The RV—4C has a Main Tuning control and a FUNCTION switch with four positions: OFF, RCV, RCV/XMIT, and XMIT. The manual covers installation, operation, service data, tube replacement, troubleshooting, and alignment.

Specifications

  • 5-inch 4 Ohm speaker
  • Dimensions: 5-3/8 inches high, 10-3/4 inches wide, 11-1/8 inches deep
  • Weight: 6-1/2 lbs

Controls & Indicators

The RV—4C has two controls: The Main Tuning control and the RV—4C FUNCTION switch. The Main Tuning control determines the frequency of the VFO and is calibrated in the same way as the transceiver VFO. The RV—4C FUNCTION control has four positions: OFF, RCV, RCV/XMIT, and XMIT. The PTO indicator lamp is located to the right of the PTO dial and lights whenever the RV—4C is being used to control the frequency.

Installation / Setup

The RV-4C is installed by plugging it into the RV-4 plug J2 on the bottom of the TR-4C chassis. No jumper removal is needed for installation or disconnection. For use with the TR-3, the bottom cover must be removed, and a jumper wire between pins 2 and 8 of the RV-3 jack (J2) should be removed. When disconnected from the TR-3, a jumper plug must be inserted in the RV-3 jack. Grounding the RV-4C chassis to the transceiver chassis and a good earth ground with a short piece of braid is necessary.

Operation

The RV-4C has two main controls: the Main Tuning control and the RV-4C FUNCTION switch. The Main Tuning control determines the frequency and is calibrated like the transceiver VFO. The FUNCTION switch has four positions: OFF, RCV, RCV/XMIT, and XMIT. In the OFF position, the unit draws current but does not provide output, allowing normal transceiver operation. In the RCV position, the RV-4C sets the receiving frequency, while the transceiver VFO sets the transmitting frequency. In the RCV/XMIT position, the RV-4C sets both transmit and receive frequencies. In the XMIT position, the RV-4C sets the transmitting frequency, and the transceiver VFO sets the receiving frequency. The PTO indicator lamp lights up when the RV-4C controls the frequency.

Troubleshooting & Error Codes

Careful consideration has been given in the design of the RV—4C to keep maintenance problems to a minimum. However, it is quite possible that some problem will arise which cannot be solved by tube substitution. If this occurs, it is suggested to either return the unit to the dealer or write directly to the service department describing the problem in detail, including full information concerning external connections, control settings, tubes substituted, etc. Equipment should not be returned to the factory without prior authorization.

The voltage and resistance charts and the schematic diagram should be valuable in isolating minor problems. However, no attempt should be made to service the RV—4C unless thoroughly familiar with electronic circuitry and servicing technique.
