The manual for the Drake R8 provides detailed instructions for setting up and operating the radio, including modifications to improve the backup time for the internal clock using a lithium battery and diode. It also covers troubleshooting steps, such as replacing the original capacitor with a tantalum capacitor to reduce leakage current, and installing an additional power switch for easier disconnection from the power supply.
Manual Overview
The manual for the Drake R8 focuses on improving the backup for the internal clock, which is essential due to the high power consumption when the device is switched off. The internal clock relies on C389, a capacitor that provides backup for approximately 15 minutes. To extend this duration, the manual suggests replacing C389 with a tantalum capacitor (0.47uF/25V) due to its lower leakage current. A lithium battery (3V, 2000mAh) is recommended as a backup power source, connected parallel to C389, with a diode (1N4148) for reverse current protection. The manual provides detailed instructions for safely replacing C389, emphasizing the need for a grounded soldering tool to prevent damage to the IC U108. Additionally, an optional power switch can be installed to disconnect the R8 from AC or DC supply without affecting the clock operation. The manual also notes that the clock’s alignment should be done in backup mode to ensure accuracy.

Installation / Setup
The setup involves several steps for modifying the Drake R8 to extend the backup time for its internal clock. Key highlights include:
1. Wiring and Components:
– A lithium battery (3V, 2000mAh) is used as a backup, connected parallel to the capacitor C389.
– A 1N4148 diode is used for reverse current protection.
2. Capacitor Replacement:
– The original C389 capacitor (1000uF) is replaced with a tantalum capacitor (0.47uF/25V) to reduce leakage current.
3. Precautions:
– Use a grounded soldering tool connected to the R8’s chassis to avoid damaging the IC U108.
– Discharge C389 before soldering.
4. Installation Steps:
– Remove the R8 from power sources, open the bottom cover, and remove the Synthesizer/Microprocessor board.
– Discharge and replace C389, ensuring correct polarity.
– Install the backup battery and diode, ensuring proper isolation and connection sequence to avoid shorting.
5. Additional Power Switch:
– An optional power switch can be installed at the rear of the R8 for easier disconnection from AC power.
These steps ensure the clock retains its settings for a longer duration when the device is powered off.

Safety & Warnings
When soldering at the connection point C389, there is a danger of destroying the IC U108. It is necessary to use a grounded soldering tool, which is connected to the R8’s ground (chassis). Before starting soldering, C389 must be discharged. Remove the R8 from mains and external DC-supply, place it with the bottom up, and remove the bottom cover. Connect the chassis of the R8 to ground, remove the Synthesizer/Microprocessor board, and unplug some connectors. Connect the ground of the soldering tool with the chassis of the R8, ensuring both have the same ground potential. Discharge C389 with a resistor of some 100 Ohms for a few seconds. Check the voltage across C389; if there is still more than 100mV, discharge C389 and check the voltage again.
