The service manual for the Model 4-NB Noise Blanker provides detailed instructions for its installation, alignment, and operation with the R-4C Receiver, including steps for setting up the device and ensuring optimal performance through alignment of specific components. It also offers troubleshooting guidance, such as checking voltage levels and adjusting controls to maintain proper functionality and minimize distortion when strong signals are received.
Manual Overview
The Model 4-NB Noise Blanker is designed for use with the R-4C Receiver to mute noise pulses, enhancing reception quality. Installation requires removing the R-4C’s top cover and inserting the 4-NB into the designated socket, ensuring proper alignment with the stand-off insulators. For alignment, tune to a 28.5 MHz crystal calibrator signal and adjust C3, C6, and R12 for optimal S meter readings. If further alignment is needed, use a VTVM to measure voltages at R45, adjusting R28, C19, and C25 as necessary. The 4-NB is pre-aligned but should be checked for optimal performance. The voltage chart provides reference values for troubleshooting at the component level, with measurements taken in the NB position using specific test equipment. For removal, compress the locking tabs on the insulators and lift the board. Ensure the R-4C is powered off during installation or removal to prevent damage.
Quick Issues Covered
- Diagnose power-up failures with R-4C and 4-NB alignment issues.
- Adjust C3, C6, and R12 for optimal noise blanker performance.
- Use schematic for circuit tracing and component identification.
Overview
The Model 4-NB is a solid-state noise blanker designed for use with the R-4C Receiver. It functions by muting the receiver during noise pulses, restoring full receiver gain between pulses. It is most effective against strong, periodic impulse noise and less effective against random noise. The 4-NB is controlled by the R-4C function switch and is activated in the NB position. Installation involves connecting the 4-NB to the R-4C and performing alignment procedures to ensure optimal performance.

Installation / Setup
To install the Model 4-NB Noise Blanker, first unplug the R-4C line cord and remove the top row of three screws on each side of the R-4C Receiver to take off the cabinet top. Remove the jumper plug from the noise blanker socket, retaining it for alignment purposes. The 4-NB mounts on four plastic printed circuit board stand-off insulators. If there is a metal dust cover, remove it by unscrewing three mounting screws. Position the 4-NB so its holes align with the insulators and push it onto them until it snaps into place. Dress the 4-NB cable toward the rear of the R-4C and plug it into the socket. Re-install the dust cover, turn on the R-4C, and follow the alignment procedure. After alignment, replace the cabinet top and screws. The 4-NB can be removed by compressing the locking tab on each insulator with pliers and pulling upward on the board corners.
Operation
The Model 4-NB Noise Blanker is used with the R-4C Receiver and is controlled by the R-4C function switch. The blanking action occurs when the switch is in the NB position. It is most effective on strong, periodic impulse noise and less effective on random noise. To install the 4-NB, unplug the R-4C line cord, remove the top row of screws on each side of the receiver, and remove the cabinet top. Remove the jumper plug from the noise blanker socket and retain it for alignment purposes. Mount the 4-NB on the plastic printed circuit board stand-off insulators and plug the 4-NB cable into the socket on the R-4C. Reinstall the dust cover and follow the alignment procedure. The 4-NB can be removed by compressing the locking tab on each mounting insulator and pulling upward on the board corners.
