DANGER! HIGH VOLTAGE
High voltages of up to hundreds of thousands of volts are used in this unit. BEWARE of high voltage when removing the outer cover of the unit. When working on the interior, avoid direct contact with the high voltage circuitry especially on the CRT unit. Electric shock of 1000 volts or more may cause electrocution and death; and, even an electric shock of only 100 volts may be fatal.

HIGH VOLTAGE WARNING FIRST AID IN CASE OF ELECTRIC SHOCK
A stable foothold is essential to prevent more extensive or additional injuries. When injured by electric shock, disinfect the burn completely and begin first aid as soon as possible. To avoid electric shock, all adjustments should be made using an insulated turning tool.

REPAIR NOTE
1. Make sure a problem is internal before disassembling the unit.
2. DO NOT open the unit until the unit is disconnected from the power source.
3. DO NOT force any of the variable components. Turn them slowly and smoothly.
4. DO NOT short any circuits or electronic parts. An insulated turning tool MUST be used for all adjustments.
5. DO NOT keep power ON for a long time when the unit is defective.
6. READ the instructions of the test equipment thoroughly before connecting equipment to the unit.

Manual Overview

The Icom IC PS-125 Service Manual provides detailed instructions for troubleshooting, error diagnostics, calibration, and board-level repair of the power supply unit. The manual outlines the operational flow starting from the AC input, which is filtered and rectified to produce a 310V DC output. This output is managed by power FETs and a high-frequency transformer, driven by the switch mode controller IC HIC-1. The secondary DC supply generates a 13.8V output, regulated through various components including fast recovery diodes and electrolytic capacitors. Troubleshooting involves checking the voltage sensing and regulation circuits, with adjustments available for output voltage and current via VR-11 and VR-12. Error diagnostics include monitoring for over-voltage and temperature rise, with components like Zener diodes and thermistors playing key roles. The manual also provides a comprehensive parts list for board-level repairs, ensuring technicians can accurately replace faulty components.

Quick Issues Covered

Diagnose power-up failures with primary rectifier array D-1 issues.

Adjust output voltage using VR-11 for 13.8V DC supply.

Calibrate maximum output current limit via VR-12 adjustments.

Overview

The Icom IC PS-125 Service Manual provides a detailed operational description of the Icom PS-125 power supply, covering its primary DC supply, switching supply, and secondary DC supply. It includes information on the components and their functions, such as the AC input voltage process, the role of the switch mode controller, and the configuration for different voltage operations. The manual also details the parts list, including transistors, diodes, capacitors, and other components used in the power supply.

The Icom PS-125 power supply operates by applying AC input voltage through an AC switch, input fuse, and filters to a primary rectifier array. It can be configured for 110-volt or 220-volt operation using a movable jumper. The primary DC supply output is then used by a switching supply involving power FETs and a high-frequency transformer. The secondary DC supply provides a 25 amp 13.8-volt DC output, which is regulated and monitored for voltage and current limits. The system includes components for over-voltage detection and temperature sensing to control the cooling fan.

NEVER connect the DC-DC convertor to an AC outlet or to a DC power supply that uses more than 32 V. This will ruin the DC-DC convertor. DO NOT expose the DC-DC convertor to rain, snow, or any liquids. Make sure a problem is internal before disassembling the DC-DC convertor. DO NOT open the DC-DC convertor until it is disconnected from its power source. DO NOT force any of the variable components; turn them slowly and smoothly. DO NOT short any circuits or electronic parts; an insulated tuning tool MUST be used for all adjustments. DO NOT keep power ON for a long time when the DC-DC convertor is defective. READ the instructions of test equipment thoroughly before connecting equipment to the transceiver.

DANGER! HIGH VOLTAGE

High voltages of up to hundreds of thousands of volts are used in this unit. BEWARE of high voltage when removing the outer cover of the unit. When working on the interior, avoid direct contact with the high voltage circuitry especially on the CRT unit and the transmit circuit.

Electric shock of 1000 volts or more causes instant electrocution and death; and, even an electric shock of only 100 volts can kill you.

To avoid electric shock, all adjustments should be made using an insulated turning tool.

PREVENTING ELECTRIC SHOCK

After removing the scanner cover, immediately discharge completely the capacitor with a screwdriver according to the procedure on page 6-1. Failing to discharge the capacitor will result in electric shock.

FIRST AID IN CASE OF ELECTRIC SHOCK

A stable foothold is essential to prevent more extensive or additional injuries. When injured by electric shock, disinfect the burn completely and begin first aid as soon as possible.

REPAIR NOTE

– Make sure a problem is internal before disassembling the unit.
– DO NOT open the unit until the unit is disconnected from the power source.
– DO NOT force any of the variable components. Turn them slowly and smoothly.
– DO NOT short any circuits of electronics parts. An insulated turning tool MUST be used for all adjustments.
– DO NOT keep power ON for a long time when the unit is defective.
– READ the instructions of the test equipment thoroughly before connecting equipment to the unit.
