Manual Overview

The BK Precision 845-Rom User’s Manual provides comprehensive guidance on configuring and troubleshooting the 845-Rom EPROM emulator. The manual emphasizes the importance of disabling any in-circuit programming voltages exceeding 5 volts to prevent damage to the device. Proper connection of the emulator involves aligning the target interface cable correctly and ensuring the RESET line is connected to the target’s reset circuitry. The emulator is powered by the target, and the POWER LED should illuminate when connected correctly. If the LED does not light, potential issues include incorrect cable connections or insufficient target power. The manual details the process for loading programs using the ER.exe utility, which requires a binary file format and offers various command line options for customization. The emulator supports multiple EPROM sizes and provides verification options to ensure successful downloads. Users are advised to connect the download cable to an unused printer port and avoid serial ports to prevent damage.

Quick Issues Covered

  • Diagnose power-up failures with target power checks and LED indicators.
  • Troubleshoot incorrect cable connections causing emulator damage.
  • Use schematics for proper reset signal connection to target circuitry.

Overview

The 845-Rom is a cost-effective EPROM emulator designed to simplify the process of updating and testing new firmware. It connects directly between the user’s target board and PC via a parallel port, allowing new code images to be downloaded and updated to the target board quickly. The emulator maintains all EPROM functions and signal integrity, eliminating the need for removing and reprogramming EPROMs. The manual covers the configuration, connection, and operation of the 845-Rom, including safety precautions and troubleshooting tips.

Installation / Setup

The installation/setup highlights for the 845-Rom include the following key points:

1. Disable any in-circuit programming voltages on the target as the 845-Rom is a 5-volt only device. Voltages greater than 5 volts or less than 0 volts can damage it.

2. Turn off the target power before plugging the supplied target interface cable into the target’s EPROM socket. Ensure proper alignment of the cable’s PIN 1 with the target’s socket PIN 1.

3. Use the appropriate 28-pin or 32-pin DIP cable based on the EPROM being emulated. For PLCC type devices, a DIP to PLCC adapter is required.

4. Connect the RESET line to enable proper target operation. The 845-Rom provides two reset outputs, ACTIVE HIGH and ACTIVE LOW, which should be connected to the target’s reset circuitry at the most upstream point available.

5. Ensure the target power is on to access the emulator. The emulator is powered by the target, and the POWER LED should glow steadily when power is applied.

6. Connect the download cable to an unused printer port on the PC, ensuring no other devices are connected to the port. Plug the other end into the 845-Rom’s “IN” port.

7. Load a binary file that is known to work in the target using ER.exe, which loads binary files into one or more 845-Roms. The ER.EXE program requires a configuration file in the same directory and offers various command line parameters for customization.

8. During the load and/or verify process, the “SELECTED” LEDs of all involved emulators will light up, and extinguish upon completion.

Safety & Warnings

Disable any in-circuit programming voltages as the 845-Rom is a 5-volt only device. Any voltage greater than 5 volts or less than 0 volts will damage it. Plugging the cable in backwards will damage the 845-Rom. Do not connect the 845-Rom’s reset output across a totem-pole or bipolar gate as this may result in damage to the 845-Rom or the target. Plugging the 845-Rom into a serial port will damage the emulator.
