Manual Overview

The BK Precision 391A Test Bench® Handheld Digital Multimeter manual provides detailed instructions for troubleshooting, diagnostics, and maintenance. For troubleshooting, the manual emphasizes checking the fuses if current measurements are not possible. The multimeter uses two fuses: F1 for mA/µA input and F2 for the 20 A input. To check for a blown fuse, insert the test lead into the respective jack, set the function switch to a non-current position, and power on the device. If no warning tone is heard, the fuse is likely blown. Error diagnostics include a low battery indicator, shown by an “E” symbol, which appears when the battery is 90% depleted. Calibration and adjustments are not explicitly detailed, but the manual specifies manual ranging for voltage, current, and resistance measurements. Board-level guidance includes safe handling practices and the use of isolation transformers for “hot chassis” equipment. The manual also advises using only the supplied safety test leads and ensuring they are in good condition. Regular maintenance involves checking and replacing the battery and fuses as needed, with specific instructions for accessing and replacing these components.

Quick Issues Covered

  • Diagnose power-up failures with fuse and battery checks.
  • Identify error codes for low battery and blown fuses.
  • Use schematics for circuit tracing and fault isolation.

Safety & Warnings

Use an insulated floor material or floor mat to stand on, and an insulated work bench surface; make certain such surfaces are not damp or wet. Keep “one hand in the pocket” while handling an instrument probe. Be particularly careful to avoid contacting a nearby metal object that could provide a good ground return path. When using a probe, touch only the insulated portion. Never touch the exposed tip portion.

Do not exceed the following input ratings. Personal injury or damage to the instrument may result:
– DC VOLTS — 1000 V (dc + ac peak)
– 500 V (dc + ac peak) on 200 mV range
– AC VOLTS 750 Vrms
– 500 V (dc + ac peak) on 200 mV range
– OHMS 500 V (dc + ac peak)
– mA 200 mA (fuse protected)
– A 20 A (fuse protected)
– Do not float more than 500 volts from earth ground.

Remove test leads before replacing batteries or fuses, and before performing any servicing on the instrument. Use only the safety type test leads supplied with the multimeter. Turn off equipment while making test connections in high voltage circuits. Discharge high-voltage capacitors after removing power.

For voltage or current measurements in high voltage equipment, do not touch equipment, meter or test leads while power is applied. If possible, familiarize yourself with the equipment being tested and the location of its high voltage points. However, remember that high voltage may appear at unexpected points in defective equipment.

Never work alone. Someone should be nearby to render aid if necessary. Training in CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) first aid is highly recommended.

Basic Usage and Operation Tips

Before using the Bk-precision-391a, ensure the device is powered with fresh batteries. Select the appropriate measurement mode and range for your application. Always connect the test leads securely and observe polarity when measuring DC voltage or current. Use the data hold function to freeze readings for easier analysis. For resistance and continuity tests, ensure the circuit is powered off to avoid damage to the meter.

Troubleshooting and Maintenance

If the meter displays erratic readings or fails to power on, check the battery condition and replace if necessary. Clean the test leads and connectors regularly to maintain good contact. Avoid exposing the device to extreme temperatures, moisture, or mechanical shock. If the display shows “OL” or overload, reduce the measurement range or disconnect the test leads immediately to prevent damage.

Safety Reminder

Always observe proper safety precautions when using the Bk-precision-391a. Do not exceed the maximum input limits specified in the manual. Avoid measuring live circuits when the device is set to resistance or continuity modes. Use insulated test leads and keep your hands away from exposed conductive parts during measurements to prevent electric shock.
