Operation

The operation of the B & K “Substitution Master,” Model 2902, involves several steps for selecting and using different components. For carbon resistor selection, connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the RX1 jack for 1-watt resistors ranging from 10 ohms to 6,800 ohms. Select the required value on the carbon resistors rotary switch, remove power from the circuit before substituting the resistor, connect test leads to the circuit, and reapply power. For 1/4 watt resistors from 10K ohms to 6.8 megohms, remove the red test lead from the RX1 jack and insert it into the RX1K jack, remembering to multiply values selected by 1000 when connected to the RX1K jack.

For power resistor selection, the process is similar to carbon resistor selection, but using the power resistor selector switch and power resistor jacks. Multiply by 100 when using RX100. The power resistor wattage rating is specified as 15 watts and 20 watts on the front panel adjacent to the power resistor jacks. Some resistors are switched in series and some in parallel to maximize wattage dissipation, as indicated in the Power Resistor Maximum Ratings Chart.

For disc/tubular capacitor selection, connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the CAP jack. Make the selection on the selector switch located directly above the CAP jack and connect test leads to the circuit where substitution is to be made.

For rectifier connections, connect the red test lead between the AC input and the RECT jack (anode) for a positive output, and the black test lead to the COM jack for positive rectified DC output voltage. The rectifier can be connected in series with a resistor to operate as a positive or negative peak clipper if required.

To connect the Model 2902 as a filtered DC power supply, make connections between the various sections as shown in Figure 1. For single electrolytic selection, select the required value from either the inner A or outer B range on the electrolytic capacitor selection switch, set the switch at this value, and insert the test leads into the COM jack and the red jack labeled A on the left. Ensure the Surge Protector switch is fully to the left, connect the leads to the circuit for substitution, and observe polarity. If the warning light does not glow, slide the Surge Protector switch to the right to place a resistor in series with the electrolytic to prevent arcing or accidental healing. When the switch is fully to the right, the resistor is removed, and the capacitor is connected directly.
