Manual Overview
The B+K Precision Models 2120B, 2121, and 2125A are 30 MHz dual-trace oscilloscopes designed for high performance at an economical price. The manual provides detailed guidance on troubleshooting, calibration, and maintenance of these oscilloscopes. Troubleshooting involves following a systematic flow to identify and resolve issues, with specific attention to error codes and diagnostics. Calibration and adjustments are crucial for accurate measurements, with periodic checks recommended to ensure the oscilloscope’s performance remains within specified limits. The manual includes board-level guidance for more in-depth repairs and adjustments, ensuring technicians can address issues at the component level. Safety precautions are emphasized, particularly when working with high voltage, to prevent electrical shock and equipment damage. The manual also covers the use of isolation transformers for “hot chassis” equipment to mitigate shock hazards. Regular maintenance, including fuse replacement and line voltage selection, is outlined to prolong the instrument’s operational life.
Quick Issues Covered
- Diagnose power-up failures in Models 2120B, 2121, and 2125A.
- Identify error codes specific to dual-trace oscilloscopes.
- Use schematics for circuit tracing and troubleshooting.

Safety & Warnings
Normal use of test equipment exposes users to danger from electrical shock, especially when testing where exposed high voltage is present. An electrical shock causing 10 milliamps of current through the heart can stop most human heartbeats, and voltage as low as 35 volts dc or ac rms is considered dangerous. Higher voltage poses a greater threat as it can more easily produce a lethal current. Users should adopt work habits that prevent contact with exposed high voltage and steer current away from the heart in case of accidental contact. Safety precautions include:
– Avoid exposing high voltage needlessly and remove housings and covers only when necessary.
– Turn off equipment while making test connections in high-voltage circuits and discharge high-voltage capacitors after removing power.
– Familiarize yourself with the equipment being tested and the location of its high voltage points, but remember that high voltage may appear unexpectedly in defective equipment.
– Use insulated floor material or a large, insulated floor mat to stand on, and an insulated work surface for equipment; ensure surfaces are not damp or wet.
– Use the “one hand in the pocket” technique while handling an instrument probe to avoid contacting a nearby metal object that could provide a ground return path.
– Touch only the insulated portion of a probe, never the exposed tip.
– Remember that ac line voltage is usually present on some power input circuits any time the equipment is connected to an ac outlet, even if turned off.
– For equipment with a two-wire ac power cord, treat it as “hot chassis” unless sure it has an isolated or earth ground chassis. Use an isolation transformer between the ac outlet and the equipment under test.
– Never work alone; someone should be nearby to render aid if necessary. Training in CPR and first aid is recommended.
