Operation
The B+K Precision Model 1746 DC Power Supply operates in two main modes: constant voltage and constant current. The crossover between these modes is smooth and automatic, with LED indicators showing the current mode. In constant voltage mode, users can preset a current limit, and if load variations cause the current to reach this limit, the unit will regulate the output current instead of the voltage. Current limits are adjustable from 5% to 100% of the maximum output. For constant current applications, the maximum voltage can be preset, and if load variations cause the current to drop below the regulated value, the unit will revert to regulated voltage operation. The power supply features coarse and fine controls for precise voltage adjustment and provides an output of 0-16 volts and 0-10 amps. It includes safety features like reverse polarity protection and overload protection. The output is isolated from the chassis and earth ground, allowing for flexible connections. Two supplies can be connected in series or parallel for increased voltage or current output.

Safety & Warnings
Normal use of test equipment can expose users to electrical shock, especially when testing in areas with exposed high voltage. Electrical shock causing 10 milliamps of current through the heart can stop most human heartbeats. Voltage as low as 35 volts dc or ac rms is considered dangerous and hazardous as it can produce a lethal current under certain conditions. Higher voltages are even more dangerous. Users should adopt practices to prevent contact with exposed high voltage and steer current away from the heart in case of accidental contact. Specific precautions include:
1. There is little danger of electrical shock from the dc output of the power supply, but certain test conditions can create a high voltage shock hazard:
a. A serious shock hazard exists with “hot chassis” type equipment unless unplugged or an isolation transformer is used.
b. If equipment under test is “powered up” and uses high voltage, power supply outputs may float to the potential at the connection point. High voltage may appear unexpectedly in defective equipment. Do not float the power supply output to more than 100 volts peak with respect to chassis or earth ground.
c. If equipment is “off” but uses high voltage, discharge high-voltage capacitors before making connections or tests. Some circuits retain high voltage long after being turned off.
2. Use only a polarized 3-wire ac outlet to ensure the power supply chassis, case, and ground terminal are connected to a good earth ground, reducing electrical shock danger.
3. Avoid exposing high voltage unnecessarily. Remove housings and covers only when necessary. Turn off equipment while making test connections in high-voltage circuits. Discharge high-voltage capacitors after removing power.

Basic Usage and Operation Tips
Before taking measurements, ensure the multimeter is set to the correct function and range. Connect the test leads securely to the device and the circuit under test. For voltage measurements, place the probes in parallel with the component; for current, connect them in series. Use the data hold function to freeze the displayed value for easier reading. Always start with the highest range if unsure of the measurement level to prevent damage.
Troubleshooting and Maintenance
If the device displays erratic readings or fails to power on, check the battery and replace it if necessary. Clean the test leads and connectors regularly to maintain good contact. Avoid exposing the multimeter to extreme temperatures or moisture. If the device is not functioning correctly after basic checks, consult the detailed manual or contact authorized service centers for repair.
