Operation

The B & K-Precision Model 1610 and 1630 DC Power Supplies are designed for general-purpose use, providing 0-30 volts DC output with adjustable coarse and fine controls. The Model 1610 has a current output of 0-1 amp, while the Model 1630 offers 0-3 amps. These power supplies can operate in either constant voltage or constant current modes, with a smooth and automatic crossover between the two. LED indicators show the current mode of operation. In constant voltage mode, a current limit can be preset, and the unit will regulate output current if the preset limit is reached. Conversely, in constant current mode, the maximum voltage can be preset, and the unit will revert to regulated voltage operation if the current drops below the regulated value.

The power supplies feature reverse polarity protection to prevent damage from improper connections and current limiting to protect both the equipment being powered and the power supply itself. The output is isolated from chassis and earth ground, allowing flexible connections. The supplies can be connected in series for a 0-to-60 volt power source or in parallel with suitable balancing resistors for increased output current. These units are suitable for various applications, including service shops, engineering labs, production testing, school laboratories, and hobbyist use.

Safety & Warnings

Normal use of test equipment can expose users to electrical shock, especially when testing where high voltage is present. Electrical shock causing 10 milliamps of current through the heart can stop most human heartbeats. Voltage as low as 35 volts DC or AC RMS should be considered dangerous as it can produce a lethal current under certain conditions. Higher voltage poses a greater threat as it can more easily produce a lethal current. Accepted practices should be followed to prevent contact with high voltage and steer current away from the heart in case of accidental contact.

There is little danger of electrical shock from the DC output of this power supply, but certain test conditions can create a high voltage shock hazard. If the equipment under test is the “hot chassis” type, a serious shock hazard exists unless the equipment is unplugged or specific precautions are observed. If the equipment under test is “powered up” and uses high voltage in any of its circuits, the power supply outputs may be floated to the potential at the point of connection. High voltage may appear at unexpected points in defective equipment. Do not float the power supply output to more than 500 volts peak with respect to chassis or earth ground. If the equipment under test is “off” and uses high voltage in any of its circuits under normal operation, discharge high-voltage capacitors before making connections or tests, as some circuits retain high voltage long after the equipment is turned off.

Basic Usage & Operation Tips

Before using the Bk-precision-1610, ensure the device is powered on and the correct measurement mode is selected. Connect the test leads to the appropriate input jacks and the circuit or component under test. For voltage measurements, use the voltage mode and connect the probes in parallel with the circuit. For current measurements, switch to current mode and connect the probes in series. Always start with the highest range if unsure of the expected measurement to prevent damage to the multimeter. Use the data hold feature to lock readings when needed.

Troubleshooting & Maintenance

If the multimeter displays erratic readings or fails to power on, check the battery and replace it if necessary. Inspect the test leads for any visible damage or wear and replace them if faulty. Clean the device regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoid exposure to moisture or extreme temperatures. If the device shows “OL” or overload, reduce the measurement range or disconnect the probes and recheck connections.

Safety Reminder

Always observe proper safety precautions when using the Bk-precision-1610. Avoid measuring voltages or currents beyond the specified limits to prevent electric shock or damage. Use insulated test leads and never touch exposed metal parts during measurement. Disconnect power from circuits before measuring resistance or continuity to avoid inaccurate readings and potential hazards.
