Manual Overview

The B&K Precision Model 1257 NTSC Pattern Generator is a versatile tool designed for testing and servicing video and television equipment. It provides a range of test patterns, including NTSC color bars, crosshatch, dots, staircase, circle, center cross, window, and raster, which are essential for diagnosing and calibrating video systems. The generator supports both composite and S-video outputs, making it suitable for various applications such as television systems, VCRs, and video disc players. For troubleshooting, the manual emphasizes the importance of understanding the equipment under test, particularly the location of high voltage points, and recommends never working alone. Calibration and adjustments can be performed using specific patterns: the staircase pattern for frequency equalization, the circle for gain adjustments, and the center cross for centering and deflection checks. The manual also provides guidance on using the window pattern for low-frequency distortion checks and the raster for assessing color monitor capabilities. The generator operates on a 9V battery or AC adapter, and features include a low battery indicator and a progressive/interlace switch.

Quick Issues Covered

  • Diagnose power-up failures with battery and adapter checks.
  • Identify error codes for video pattern selection issues.
  • Calibrate video outputs using staircase and window patterns.

Installation / Setup

Refer to the PDF for details.

Operation

1. Place the scan type switch to the proper position for the type of unit to be tested.
2. Connect the video and audio or S-video output to the corresponding inputs of the equipment under test.
3. Turn on the power to both the unit under test and the NTSC Generator.
4. Press the video pattern push-button to step to the desired pattern. By holding the video pattern switch, the output will scroll back to the previously displayed patterns.

Safety & Warnings

An electrical current of over 10 milliamps passing through the heart will stop most human hearts. Voltage as low as 35 volts DC or AC RMS should be considered hazardous since it can produce lethal current under certain conditions. Be sure to observe the following safety precautions:

1. There are no high voltages in the color pattern generator, but the equipment under test usually contains hazardous high voltage. Always follow the safety recommendations of the manufacturer of your equipment.
2. Some equipment may be wired as a “hot chassis” type; equipment using two-wire power plugs are always suspect and it may even include those with polarized plugs. Never touch the chassis of “hot chassis” type equipment to avoid the possibility of a serious, possibly fatal electrical shock.
3. Don’t expose yourself needlessly to high voltage; only remove housings and covers when necessary.
4. Familiarize yourself with the equipment being tested and the location of its high voltage points. However, be aware that high voltage may appear at unexpected points in defective equipment.
5. Never work alone. Someone should be nearby to render aid if needed. Training in CPR (Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) is highly recommended.

Basic Usage & Operation Tips

Before using the Bk-precision-1257, ensure the test leads are properly connected to the multimeter and the device under test is powered off when measuring resistance or continuity. Select the appropriate measurement mode using the rotary switch. For AC measurements, use the True RMS setting to obtain accurate readings. Always start with the highest range if uncertain about the expected measurement value to prevent damage to the meter. Use the data hold function to freeze readings for easier documentation.

Troubleshooting & Maintenance

If the display shows erratic readings or no response, check the test leads for damage and replace the batteries if the low battery indicator appears. Clean the test leads and input jacks regularly to ensure good contact. Avoid exposing the multimeter to extreme temperatures or moisture. If the device fails to power on or shows persistent errors, consult the manual for detailed troubleshooting steps or contact authorized service centers.

Safety Reminder

Always observe proper safety precautions when using the Bk-precision-1257. Do not exceed the specified input limits to avoid electric shock or damage to the device. Use insulated test leads and avoid contact with live circuits. Disconnect power before measuring resistance or continuity. Keep the device away from water and flammable materials. Proper handling and adherence to safety guidelines will ensure reliable operation and user safety.
