Overview
The Hewlett-Packard Model 4204A Oscillator is a general-purpose digital oscillator that provides a sine wave output signal adjustable in frequency from 10 Hz to 1 MHz and in amplitude from 0 to 10 volts rms into a 600-ohm load. It features frequency selection through four in-line switches and a frequency control for continuous adjustment. The oscillator includes an output attenuator for accurate attenuation in 10-dB steps and an amplitude control for continuous adjustment between steps. The output signal level is measured by a front-panel meter calibrated in both rms volts and dBm. The 4204A is designed to be isolated from power-line ground to minimize shunting and avoid ground loops. It uses stabilized amplifiers and regulated power supplies for frequency stability. The product manual covers installation instructions, operation on different voltage lines, grounding, and operating procedures.

Installation / Setup
The installation and setup highlights for the Hewlett-Packard Model 4204A Oscillator include the following:
1. Unpacking and Inspection: Upon receiving the shipment, inspect the shipping container with the carrier present. If the carton shows evidence of rough handling, note this on the delivery receipt. If damage is discovered after opening the carton, preserve the carton and packing materials, notify the carrier, and request a written inspection.
2. Rack Installation: The oscillator is ready for bench operation as shipped. For rack mounting, remove the tilt stand and feet from the bottom, attach a rack filler strip along the bottom edge of the front panel, and attach flanges to the side panels.
3. Operation on 115 or 230-Volt Lines: The oscillator can operate on either 115 or 230-volt power lines. A slide switch on the rear panel allows for quick conversion. Use a narrow blade screwdriver to adjust the switch. A 0.2-ampere, slow-blow fuse is used for both voltages. Do not change the line voltage selector switch setting during operation.
4. Grounding the Oscillator Cabinet: The oscillator has a detachable power cord with a round pin that connects the cabinet to the power-line ground. For a 2-blade outlet, use a connector adapter and connect the short lead to ground. Do not disconnect the ground wire; instead, disconnect the captive ground strap between the red and black OUTPUT terminals for ungrounded operation.
Operation
The operation of the 4204A Oscillator involves selecting the output frequency using four in-line indicating switches, one for each digit, and a frequency control for continuous adjustment between digital settings. The oscillator is turned on, and the output level is adjusted as read on the meter. It is important to connect the oscillator to a 600-ohm load. The output frequency is within specified accuracy a few seconds after turn on. The first frequency selector should be set to “0” only on the Hz frequency range.
