The Sencore Mighty Mite setup manual provides detailed instructions for setting up and operating the TC114, TC130, TC136, TC142, and TC154 tube checkers, including guidance on adjusting controls, performing emission and grid leakage tests, and conducting short tests. It also offers troubleshooting tips such as checking for filament sensitivity and ensuring proper warm-up times for tubes to prevent damage and ensure accurate testing results.
Manual Overview
The Sencore TC130 Mighty Mite tube tester manual provides essential guidance for technicians on setting up and troubleshooting the device. The manual emphasizes the importance of correctly setting controls A, B, C, and D according to the set-up chart before inserting the tube into the designated socket. Calibration is achieved by adjusting the CAL control to ensure the meter reads full scale. The manual details the procedure for conducting emission and grid leakage tests, highlighting the significance of the SHORT TEST function to identify shorts or excessive leakage. Technicians are advised to perform a LIFE TEST to check for filament sensitivity, which involves reducing the filament voltage and observing any changes in meter readings. The manual also includes specific instructions for handling magnoval-based tubes to prevent socket damage. Additionally, it provides a comprehensive tube chart for reference, indicating normal shorts and specific test settings for various tube types.
Quick Issues Covered
- Diagnose tube emission and grid leakage issues.
- Identify shorts using the SHORT TEST function.
- Trace circuits with detailed schematics for troubleshooting.

Operation
The operation of the Mighty Mite tube tester involves setting controls A, B, C, and D according to a set-up chart and inserting the tube into the indicated socket. If the tube has a plate cap, a plate cap lead should be used. The FUNCTION switch is set to ‘CAL’ and the CAL control is adjusted so that the meter reads full scale. The FUNCTION switch is then set to ‘EMISSION’ to read the top scale on the meter. If the tube reads good emission, the FUNCTION switch is set to ‘GRID LEAKAGE’ to check grid leakage on the lower scale.
For the SHORT TEST, the FUNCTION switch is set to ‘SHORT TEST’ and switch D is rotated through all positions. The short indicator light will glow if the tube is shorted or has excessive leakage. Faint flashes in the short indicator should be disregarded. Tubes with an asterisk in the set-up chart have internal connections that may show as a short on certain settings. The H-K setting is used for heater to cathode leakage or short test.
Additional tests include checking for filament sensitivity by performing a LIFE TEST. This involves testing the tube for emission and, if it reads in the GOOD area, switching the FILAMENT (A) switch down one step. A good tube will not affect the meter reading, but a filament sensitive tube will cause the reading to drop. If the reading falls but remains in the GOOD area, the tube is acceptable; if it falls to the BAD area, the tube should be replaced.
For magnoval based tubes, they are checked in specific sockets depending on the model of the Mighty Mite. The tube should not be fully inserted into the socket to avoid damage. Instead, firm contact should be made between the tube pins and socket contacts during the test.

The Sencore TC130 Mighty Mite Set-Up Book Tube CHART is a precision testing and calibration device designed for servicing and aligning vintage vacuum tube equipment. Ideal for technicians and hobbyists, this compact instrument provides accurate tube characteristic charts and measurements, enabling efficient troubleshooting and optimal performance tuning of tube-based electronics.
Main Features & Specifications
- Comprehensive tube characteristic chart display for a wide range of vacuum tubes
- Compact and portable design for easy use in field and workshop environments
- Accurate measurement of tube parameters including transconductance, plate current, and voltage
- Simple interface with clear analog dials and controls for quick setup
- Durable construction with reliable components for long-term use
- Compatible with most common vacuum tubes used in vintage radios, amplifiers, and test equipment
Basic Usage & Operation Tips
Before using the TC130, ensure the device is properly connected to a stable power source. Insert the vacuum tube into the designated socket carefully, aligning pins correctly to avoid damage. Use the control knobs to select the tube type and adjust the operating parameters according to the tube’s datasheet specifications. Observe the analog meters to read tube characteristics, and compare these readings against the provided tube charts for accurate diagnostics. Always allow the tube to warm up for a few minutes before taking measurements for consistent results.
Troubleshooting & Maintenance
If readings appear erratic or inconsistent, verify all connections and ensure the tube is seated properly. Clean the tube socket contacts periodically to maintain good electrical contact. Replace any blown fuses with the specified rating to protect the device. For calibration issues, refer to the user manual for step-by-step recalibration procedures or consult a qualified technician. Store the device in a dry, dust-free environment to prolong its lifespan.
Safety Reminder
Always handle vacuum tubes and the TC130 device with care, as tubes can become hot during operation. Avoid touching live circuits and ensure the device is powered off before inserting or removing tubes. Use the equipment in a well-ventilated area and keep away from moisture to prevent electrical shock or damage. Follow all safety instructions outlined in the manual to ensure safe and effective use.
