Safety & Warnings

The manual contains several safety warnings and precautions:

1. High voltage is used in the operation of the equipment, which can cause death on contact if safety precautions are not observed.
2. When working on the power supply unit with the bottom plate off, be cautious as d-c voltages exceed 400 volts and a-c potentials can reach up to 900 volts, posing a danger to life.
3. With the dust cover and bottom plate removed from the receiver, voltages up to 250 volts are exposed on top of the chassis, and up to 400 volts underneath.
4. Some service checks must be performed inside the set with high voltage on. During these checks, always have another person present who can render aid. Keep one hand in your pocket to prevent touching the electrical circuit with more than one part of the body at a time.
5. Audio-frequency voltages up to 150 volts may be present at the 600-ohm SPKR terminals under certain conditions. Turn the AUDIO GAIN control to 0 before touching these terminals.
6. Never remove the sheet metal covers from the connector cable terminal strips without first detaching the plug from the a-c power line or disconnecting the batteries, as turning the OFF-ON switch to OFF is not sufficient.
7. In case of electric shock, shut off the high voltage immediately and ground the circuits. Avoid direct contact with the live conductor or the victim’s body. Use a dry board, dry clothing, or another nonconductor to free the victim. An ax may be used to cut the high-voltage wire, but use extreme caution to avoid the resulting electric flash.

Hammarlund SP-200 Instruction and Service Manual Overview

The Hammarlund SP-200 is a classic shortwave communications receiver designed for both amateur radio enthusiasts and professional users. Renowned for its robust build and reliable performance, the SP-200 covers a wide range of frequencies, enabling clear reception of international broadcasts, amateur signals, and utility transmissions. This manual provides detailed instructions and service information to help users operate and maintain the device effectively.

Main Features and Specifications

  • Frequency coverage: 540 kHz to 30 MHz across multiple bands
  • Multiple tuning ranges with fine and coarse controls
  • High sensitivity and selectivity for clear signal reception
  • Built-in BFO (Beat Frequency Oscillator) for CW and SSB reception
  • Robust analog dial with calibrated frequency markings
  • External antenna and speaker connections
  • Durable metal chassis designed for long-term use

Basic Usage and Operation Tips

To operate the SP-200, first connect a suitable antenna and power source. Use the band selector to choose the desired frequency range, then adjust the tuning dial slowly to locate the signal. Utilize the fine tuning knob for precise frequency adjustments. Engage the BFO switch when listening to Morse code (CW) or single sideband (SSB) transmissions. Adjust the volume and tone controls to optimize audio clarity. Regularly check and calibrate the dial to maintain accurate frequency readings.

Troubleshooting and Maintenance Notes

If you experience weak or distorted reception, verify antenna connections and ensure the power supply is stable. Check all tubes and replace any that show signs of wear or failure. Clean the tuning capacitor and switches periodically to prevent static and noise. For persistent issues, refer to the detailed circuit diagrams and alignment procedures in the manual. Always use recommended replacement parts to preserve performance and reliability.

Safety Reminder

Always disconnect the SP-200 from the power source before performing any maintenance or repairs. Avoid contact with high-voltage components inside the receiver to prevent electric shock. Use caution when handling tubes, as they can become hot during operation. Store the device in a dry, dust-free environment to prevent damage and ensure safe operation.
