Safety & Warnings
The manual contains several safety warnings and precautions:
1. High voltage is used in the operation of the equipment, which can result in death on contact if safety precautions are not observed.
2. When working on the power supply unit with the bottom plate off, be aware that d-c voltages are over 400 volts and a-c potentials can reach up to 900 volts, which are dangerous to life.
3. With the dust cover and bottom plate removed from the receiver, voltages up to 250 volts are exposed at several points on top of the chassis, and voltages up to 400 volts are exposed at several points underneath the chassis.
4. Some service checks must be made inside the set with the high voltage on. During these checks, always have another person present who is capable of rendering aid. Keep one hand in your pocket while making high-voltage measurements to prevent touching the electrical circuit with more than one part of the body at one time.
5. Audio-frequency voltages up to 150 volts may be present at the 600-ohm SPKR terminals under certain conditions. Turn the AUDIO GAIN control to 0 before touching these terminals.
6. Never remove the sheet metal covers from the connector cable terminal strips without first detaching the plug from the a-c power line (or disconnecting the batteries, if used); turning the OFF-ON switch to OFF is not enough.
7. In case of electric shock, shut off the high voltage at once and ground the circuits. If the high voltage cannot be turned off without delay, free the victim from contact with the live conductor as promptly as possible. Avoid direct contact with either the live conductor or the victim’s body. Use a dry board, dry clothing, or other nonconductor to free the victim. An ax may be used to cut the high-voltage wire, but extreme caution should be used to avoid the resulting electric flash.

Overview
The Hammarlund SCR-244-A/B is a vintage military shortwave communications receiver developed in 1948. Designed primarily for field use, this rugged receiver allows operators to tune into a wide range of frequencies with high sensitivity and selectivity, making it ideal for reliable long-distance radio communications. Its robust construction and precise tuning capabilities made it a trusted piece of equipment for military and amateur radio enthusiasts alike.
Main Features and Specifications
- Frequency Range: 1.5 to 18 MHz coverage in multiple bands
- Superheterodyne receiver design for improved selectivity
- Multiple tuning dials for fine and coarse adjustments
- Built-in crystal filter for enhanced signal clarity
- Robust metal chassis suitable for field conditions
- Power supply options: Battery or external DC source
- Audio output for headphones or external speaker
Basic Usage and Operation Tips
Begin by powering the unit with the recommended power source and allowing it to warm up briefly. Use the band selector to choose the desired frequency range, then adjust the main tuning dial to locate the signal. Fine-tune using the vernier dial for optimal clarity. Utilize the crystal filter to reduce adjacent channel interference. Always connect a suitable antenna and ground to maximize reception quality.
Troubleshooting and Maintenance
If reception is weak or distorted, verify antenna connections and power supply voltage. Regularly inspect tubes and replace any that show signs of wear or failure. Clean control knobs and switches periodically to prevent static or intermittent operation. Store the receiver in a dry, dust-free environment to avoid corrosion and damage to internal components.
Safety Reminder
Always ensure the receiver is powered off before performing any maintenance or tube replacements. Avoid exposure to high voltages inside the unit, as lethal shock hazards exist. Use proper grounding techniques to prevent electrical hazards and protect both the operator and the equipment.
