Safety & Warnings

Audio frequency voltages up to 150 volts may be present at the 600 ohm (SPKR) terminals under certain conditions. Turn the AUDIO GAIN control to 0 before touching these terminals. Never remove the sheet metal covers from the connector cable terminal strips without first detaching the plug from the a-c power line (or disconnecting the batteries); turning the OFF-ON switch to OFF is not enough. With dust cover and bottom plate removed from the receiver great care must be exercised, as 250 volts direct current are present at several points on top of the chassis, and d-c voltages up to 400 and a-c voltages up to 260 exist at several points underneath the chassis. Still greater care must be taken when working on the power supply unit with the bottom plate off. Here are d-c voltages of over 400, and a-c potentials up to 900 volts. There is no high-voltage d-c electrical shock hazard during normal operation of this equipment after it has been properly connected and installed.

Hammarlund RA-84-B Instruction Service Manual Overview

The Hammarlund RA-84-B is a classic communications receiver designed for reliable shortwave and AM broadcast reception. Widely used by amateur radio enthusiasts and professionals alike, this device offers precise tuning and robust performance across a broad frequency range. The RA-84-B is known for its durable construction and clear audio output, making it an essential tool for monitoring radio signals and conducting radio communications.

Main Features and Specifications

  • Frequency Coverage: 540 kHz to 30 MHz
  • Multiple Band Selection for versatile reception
  • High Sensitivity and Selectivity for clear signal reception
  • Built-in BFO (Beat Frequency Oscillator) for CW and SSB demodulation
  • Analog Dial with Fine Tuning Knob for precise frequency control
  • External Speaker and Headphone Jack options
  • Robust Metal Chassis for durability and stability

Basic Usage and Operation Tips

To operate the RA-84-B, first power on the unit and select the desired frequency band. Use the main tuning dial to locate the station, then fine-tune with the vernier control for optimal clarity. Adjust the volume and tone controls to suit listening preferences. For CW or SSB signals, engage the BFO to properly demodulate the transmission. Regularly check antenna connections to ensure strong signal reception.

Troubleshooting and Maintenance Notes

If reception is weak or distorted, verify antenna integrity and connection quality. Inspect tubes and replace any that show signs of wear or failure. Clean the tuning capacitor and control knobs periodically to prevent static or erratic tuning behavior. Ensure ventilation openings are free from dust to avoid overheating. Refer to the service manual for detailed circuit diagrams and alignment procedures.

Safety Reminder

Always disconnect the receiver from power before performing any maintenance or repairs. Avoid exposing the unit to moisture or extreme temperatures. Use caution when handling internal components, as some parts may retain high voltage even after power is removed. Following proper safety protocols ensures safe operation and prolongs the life of your Hammarlund RA-84-B receiver.
