Manual Overview

The Hammarlund I.F. Noise Silencer Accessory is designed for installation in Hammarlund HQ-170 and HQ-180 communication receivers. It includes three vacuum tubes and an I.F. Adaptor Socket Assembly. Installation involves specific procedures for each receiver model, requiring tools like hex nut drivers and soldering irons. For the HQ-170, the silencer sub-chassis is attached using existing screws, while for the HQ-180, it requires an adaptor bracket and specific mounting on the bandspread tuning gang. Both models require careful soldering and connection of wires to integrate the silencer into the receiver’s circuitry.

The silencer operates by reducing noise during signal reception, using a concentric knob to adjust the level of silencing. It works by temporarily silencing the receiver during noise pulses, enhancing signal clarity without noticeable audio gaps. The silencer is particularly effective for CW and SSB signals, improving reception in noisy environments. The system uses two I.F. Amplifier circuits, with one being a low-gain noise-controlled amplifier, which decreases amplification in the presence of noise, thus reducing interference.

Quick Issues Covered

  • Diagnose power-up failures with HQ-170 and HQ-180 models.
  • Calibrate noise silencing using concentric control knobs.
  • Trace circuits using detailed schematics for noise silencer installation.

Installation / Setup

The installation of the Hammarlund I.F. Noise Silencer Accessory involves specific procedures for the HQ-170 and HQ-180 models. For both models, tools required include hollow shaft hex nut drivers, a small set-screw type screwdriver, a small soldering iron, and a Phillips head screwdriver. The kit includes a noise silencer sub-chassis with an adaptor socket assembly, various knobs and screws, a bracket for the HQ-180, and other components.

For the HQ-170, the installation involves removing cabinet screws, loosening the clock shaft knob, and positioning the noise silencer sub-chassis against the receiver chassis using existing screws. The control knobs are replaced and re-soldered to match the original configuration. The silencer tube socket adaptor is inserted into the V4-6BAG tube socket.

For the HQ-180, the sub-chassis is attached to the bandspread tuning gang using an adaptor bracket and Pal-Nut. Similar steps for knob replacement and wire soldering are followed. The silencer tube socket adaptor is inserted into the V4-6BA6 tube socket.

In both models, the red and black wires are connected as specified, and the lead wires are positioned along the front panel.

Operation

After the I.F. Noise Silencer has been installed in either the HQ-170 or HQ-180 Receiver, both the existing Noise Limiter and the new I.F. Noise Silencer can be used independently or together. The existing noise limiter is an audio amplitude limiting device, controlled by the smaller knob, which is normally adjusted to the extreme counterclockwise position (Limiter-OFF) and turned clockwise to increase audio limiting. The I.F. Noise Silencer is introduced into the middle of the receiver circuitry to silence the receiver during noise pulses. The larger concentric knob controls the degree of I.F. Noise silencing, normally adjusted to its extreme counter-clockwise position (Silence-OFF) and turned clockwise to increase effectiveness. The knob should be adjusted to suit listening conditions, and its position depends on signal strength, noise, and noise type. This silencing is more effective on CW and SSB, allowing reception of signals otherwise obscured by noise.
