Safety & Warnings
Audio frequency voltages up to 150 volts may be present at the 600 ohm (SPKR) terminals under certain conditions. Turn the AUDIO GAIN control to 0 before touching these terminals. Never remove the sheet metal covers from the connector cable terminal strips without first detaching the plug from the a-c power line (or disconnecting the batteries); turning the OFF-ON switch to OFF is not enough. With dust cover and bottom plate removed from the receiver great care must be exercised, as 250 volts direct current are present at several points on top of the chassis, and d-c voltages up to 400 and a-c voltages up to 260 exist at several points underneath the chassis. Still greater care must be taken when working on the power supply unit with the bottom plate off. Here are d-c voltages of over 400, and a-c potentials up to 900 volts. There is no high-voltage d-c electrical shock hazard during normal operation of this equipment after it has been properly connected and installed.

Hammarlund BC-1004-C Instruction Service Manual Overview
The Hammarlund BC-1004-C is a classic communications receiver widely used for shortwave and amateur radio listening. Renowned for its robust construction and reliable performance, this device covers a broad frequency range, making it ideal for both hobbyists and professional users seeking clear and stable signal reception. The BC-1004-C excels in delivering precise tuning and excellent audio quality, supporting various communication needs.
Main Features and Specifications
- Frequency Coverage: 540 kHz to 30 MHz
- Superheterodyne receiver design for enhanced selectivity
- Multiple tuning ranges with calibrated dials
- Built-in BFO (Beat Frequency Oscillator) for CW and SSB reception
- High sensitivity and low noise audio output
- Robust metal chassis for durability and shielding
- External antenna and speaker connections
- Power supply: 110-120V AC or optional DC operation
Basic Usage and Operation Tips
To operate the BC-1004-C, first connect a suitable antenna and power source. Use the main tuning dial to select the desired frequency band, then fine-tune using the calibrated vernier control for precise signal acquisition. Engage the BFO switch when listening to Morse code (CW) or single sideband (SSB) transmissions to improve clarity. Adjust the volume and tone controls to optimize audio quality. Regularly monitor signal strength and adjust antenna positioning to enhance reception.
Troubleshooting and Maintenance Notes
For optimal performance, periodically inspect all connections and clean the tuning dial mechanism to prevent stiffness. If the receiver fails to power on, verify the power source and check fuses. In cases of distorted audio or weak reception, ensure the antenna is properly connected and undamaged. Refer to the service manual for detailed alignment procedures and component replacement guidelines. Avoid exposing the unit to excessive moisture or dust to prolong its lifespan.
Safety Reminder
Always disconnect the receiver from the power source before performing any maintenance or internal inspection. Use caution when handling electrical components to avoid shock hazards. Ensure the device is operated in a well-ventilated area and avoid placing it near heat sources. Follow all safety instructions outlined in the manual to ensure safe and reliable operation.
