Safety & Warnings

The manual provides several safety warnings and precautions:

1. High voltage is used in the operation of the equipment, and death on contact may result if safety precautions are not observed.
2. When working on the power supply unit with the bottom plate off, be cautious as d-c voltages can exceed 400 volts and a-c potentials can reach up to 900 volts, which are dangerous to life.
3. With the dust cover and bottom plate removed from the receiver, voltages up to 250 volts are exposed at several points on top of the chassis, and voltages up to 400 volts are exposed underneath the chassis.
4. Some service checks must be made inside the set with high voltage on. Always have another person present capable of rendering aid, and keep one hand in your pocket to prevent touching the electrical circuit with more than one part of the body at a time.
5. Audio-frequency voltages up to 150 volts may be present at the 600-ohm SPKR terminals under certain conditions. Turn the AUDIO GAIN control to 0 before touching these terminals.
6. Never remove the sheet metal covers from the connector cable terminal strips without first detaching the plug from the a-c power line or disconnecting the batteries, as turning the OFF-ON switch to OFF is not enough.
7. In case of electric shock, shut off the high voltage at once and ground the circuits. If the high voltage cannot be turned off without delay, free the victim from contact with the live conductor as promptly as possible using a dry board, dry clothing, or other nonconductor. Avoid direct contact with either the live conductor or the victim’s body. Use extreme caution to avoid the resulting electric flash.

Overview of the Hammarlund BC-1004-B/C/D

The Hammarlund BC-1004 series is a classic communication receiver designed for high-performance radio signal reception across a wide frequency range. Widely used by amateur radio enthusiasts and professionals alike, this receiver offers exceptional sensitivity and selectivity, making it ideal for shortwave listening, military communications, and general radio monitoring. The BC-1004-B/C/D models provide reliable and stable operation, ensuring clear audio output and accurate tuning.

Main Features and Specifications

  • Frequency Coverage: 1.25 to 30 MHz continuous tuning
  • Multiple Bands: Covers several HF bands with selectable filters
  • Modes Supported: AM, CW, and SSB reception
  • High Sensitivity and Selectivity for clear signal reception
  • Built-in BFO (Beat Frequency Oscillator) for CW and SSB demodulation
  • Analog tuning dial with calibrated frequency markings
  • External speaker and headphone output options
  • Robust metal chassis for durability and shielding

Basic Usage and Operation Tips

To operate the BC-1004, first power on the receiver and allow it to warm up for optimal performance. Use the band selector to choose the desired frequency range, then fine-tune using the main dial for precise signal acquisition. Adjust the volume and tone controls for comfortable listening. When receiving CW or SSB signals, enable the BFO to improve clarity. For best results, connect an appropriate external antenna and ensure proper grounding.

Troubleshooting and Maintenance Notes

If you experience weak or distorted signals, verify antenna connections and check for any loose wiring inside the unit. Regularly clean the tuning dial and control knobs to prevent dust buildup. If the receiver fails to power on, inspect the fuse and power supply components. For persistent issues, consult the detailed service manual for component testing and alignment procedures. Periodic recalibration is recommended to maintain frequency accuracy.

Safety Reminder

Always disconnect the receiver from the power source before performing any maintenance or internal inspections. Avoid exposing the unit to moisture or extreme temperatures to prevent electrical hazards and damage. Use only the specified power supply voltage to ensure safe operation.
