Installation / Setup
Unpacking the receiver involves checking all shipping tags and labels for instructions before removing or destroying them. The power source requires a power outlet supplying 105-125 volts d.c. or 50-60 cycle a.c. current. If the receiver does not operate after a 60-second warm-up period when using d.c., the power plug should be reversed. For operation from 220 volts a.c./d.c., a ballast unit 24B874 is needed, which can be obtained from a Hallicrafters Dealer. The receiver should be placed away from radiators or hot air sources, with at least three inches of clearance from the wall for air circulation.
For antenna connections, terminals marked A1, A2, and G on the back of the set are used. A 15-foot antenna wire is included and should be uncoiled for maximum signal pickup. In difficult reception areas or steel buildings, an outside antenna 50 to 100 feet long may be necessary. The antenna connects to A1, with a jumper between A2 and G. Improved reception may be achieved by connecting a lead from terminal G to a cold water pipe or good ground.
For optimal performance, an outside doublet antenna is recommended. The length of the doublet is determined by dividing 468 by the frequency (in megacycles) at the high end of the desired range. A doublet antenna is directional broadside to its length. When using a ribbon type transmission line, connect it to terminals A1 and A2, and disconnect the jumper between A2 and G. For a coaxial transmission line, connect the inner conductor to A1 and the outer conductor to A2, with the jumper between A2 and G.
Operation
Each control of the radio receiver has a specific function that enhances its reception capabilities. Familiarity with these controls and their effects on performance is necessary for full appreciation of the receiver.
The Sensitivity Control is used with the Volume Control to adjust volume. It determines the radio’s ability to pick up weak distant stations and is normally set fully clockwise for maximum signal pickup. If the signal is too strong, causing distortion or noise, the Sensitivity Control should be turned counterclockwise. If more volume is needed after decreasing sensitivity, the Volume Control should be used.
The Band Selector Control is set for the desired tuning band, with band numbers on the right side of the large dial.
The Volume Control is turned clockwise to increase volume or counterclockwise to decrease it.
The AVC Switch controls the automatic volume control circuit. When set to ON, it maintains a uniform volume level despite variations in signal strength. For CW reception, it should be set to OFF.
The CW/AM Switch should be set to AM for voice and musical broadcasts or to CW for code signals.
The Noise Limiter Switch is normally set to OFF. It should be set to ON to activate the noise limiter circuit during severe electrical disturbances.
The Tone Control is a combination on-off switch and 5-position tone control.
