Manual Overview

The Hallicrafters BULLETIN manual outlines modifications for implementing break-in keying on the HT-37 model. The procedure involves replacing a single potentiometer (R49) with a dual potentiometer (R49A and R49B) and adding a 4.7 megohm resistor. The VOX control adjustment remains unaffected by this change. To enable automatic break-in keying, set the OPERATION control to “MOX” and adjust the CW DELAY control (R49B) counterclockwise until the VOX relay deactivates. This setup ensures the VOX relay activates with the first key press, initiating transmission. The CW DELAY control determines the delay between transmission end and receiver reactivation; for shorter delays, adjust further counterclockwise. For normal CW operation, the CW DELAY should be at its maximum clockwise position. The adjustment of the CW DELAY control is not required when switching to other modes like DSB or SSB. The dual potentiometer is available from the service department.

Quick Issues Covered

  • Adjust CW DELAY for break-in keying on HT-37.
  • Install dual potentiometer for VOX control modification.
  • Add 4.7 megohm resistor for key line adjustment.

Operation

Automatic break-in keying is accomplished by placing the OPERATION control in the “MOX” position and adjusting the CW DELAY control (R49B, sleeve shaft) counterclockwise until the VOX relay de-energizes. When the key is closed, the VOX relay energizes, and transmission begins with the first dot. For shorter delays, turn the CW DELAY control further counterclockwise. To restore normal CW operation on “MOX,” return the CW DELAY control to its maximum clockwise position. The CW DELAY control adjustment does not need to be changed when switching to other manually operated modes such as DSB or SSB. For normal manual CW operation, the CW DELAY control must be in its maximum clockwise position.

Hallicrafters HT-37 Information Bulletin – Overview

The Hallicrafters HT-37 is a classic high-frequency communications receiver designed for amateur radio enthusiasts and shortwave listeners. Renowned for its robust construction and reliable performance, the HT-37 covers a wide range of HF frequencies, providing clear reception and excellent sensitivity. This manual offers detailed guidance on operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting the HT-37 to ensure optimal performance.

Main Features and Specifications

  • Frequency Coverage: 1.5 to 30 MHz across multiple bands
  • Superheterodyne receiver design with multiple IF stages
  • Built-in BFO (Beat Frequency Oscillator) for CW and SSB reception
  • Variable selectivity filters for improved signal clarity
  • Analog dial with calibrated frequency markings
  • External speaker and antenna connections
  • Robust metal chassis for durability

Basic Usage and Operation Tips

To operate the HT-37, first connect a suitable HF antenna and power source. Use the band selector to choose the desired frequency range, then tune the main dial slowly to locate signals. Adjust the RF gain and volume controls to optimize reception. For CW or SSB signals, engage the BFO and fine-tune for clear audio. Regularly calibrate the dial using a known frequency reference to maintain accuracy.

Troubleshooting and Maintenance Notes

Common issues include weak reception or distorted audio, often caused by aging tubes or misaligned circuits. Periodically inspect and replace vacuum tubes as needed. Clean all switches and contacts to prevent static or dropouts. If the receiver fails to power on, verify the power supply and fuses. Refer to the alignment procedures in the manual to adjust IF and oscillator circuits for peak performance.

Safety Reminder

Always disconnect the HT-37 from power before performing any maintenance or internal inspections. Use caution when handling vacuum tubes, as they can become hot during operation and may break easily. Ensure proper grounding of the equipment to avoid electrical shock hazards. Follow all local electrical codes and safety guidelines when installing antennas and power connections.
